(CBC) -- Canadian warplanes have dropped 240 laser-guided bombs on Libya so far in the NATO-led mission, according to the military.

Brig.-Gen. Richard Blanchette made the revelation during a weekly briefing on Canada's involvement in the air campaign over the North African country aimed at protecting civilians from attacks by forces loyal to Libyan ruler Moammar Gadhafi.

Six CF-18s have flown 324 attack missions so far. A spare CF-18 is also deployed to the mission.

The announcement comes after the military initially refused to reveal how many bombs have been dropped during the mission, citing operational security concerns.

Blanchette wouldn't disclose the cost of the 227-kilogram bombs, or of Canada's mission so far, saying that decision was up to the government, not the Canadian Forces.

Earlier this month, the military published a request to buy 1,300 new $100,000 laser-guided bombs, reportedly all for use in the Libyan campaign.

Blanchette would not disclose details of the mission, unlike some of Canada's allies who often give updates on their military strikes.

"It is a national prerogative to release information," he said

Blanchette said the Canadian military has decided releasing more information would endanger its pilots.

But NDP defence critic Jack Harris said Canadians have a right to know what the Canadian military is doing in their name and with their money.

"Canadians deserve transparency on what's happening in Libya, the number of sorties, the number of bombs dropped, the targets," Harris said.

"The Canadian Department of Defence has a history of keeping things secret from the people of Canada," Harris said. "They have gotten away with it and they continue to get away with it, as long as they're allowed to do so."

This is costing so much, Harper refuses to tell us the amount.

Since when did enforcing a no-fly zone require bombing things that don't fly?

And yet we are expected to "tighten our belts"
Disgusting - and all this while people here go hungry, but the hawks always seem to find enough for some new Yank-made bombs

Steven Harper, the conservative president of Canada is the Canadian avatar of George Bush Jr. Only thing is George Bush is not a racist where as Steven Harper is as British descendent as it comes towards immigration etc.

Harper has his good points (just like Bush Jr. he is consistent, very rewarding and loyal to people loyal to him) but is vindictive to people who oppose him, unlike Bush.

I am not surprised that he takes an active part in any bombing compromising perceived Canadian neutrality and fairness in the international arena, endangering Canadians.

As someone asked here, how can Canada do it when Libya has not bombed Canada directly?

Harper is on his way to sending Canada back to the stone age just like the Repubs want to do in the US.

Wait, Bush isnt vindictive to people who oppose him? Have you mentioned that to Joe Wilson at all?

May 25, 2011: Canada has ordered another 1,300 Paveway laser guided bombs. This order was apparently triggered by the large number of bombs used during current operations in Libya. There, Canadian CF-18 fighter-bombers have flown over 300 sorties, which could have resulted in the use many Paveways. In practice, the CF-18s have probably used less than 500 smart bombs so far. The Libyan troops loyal to dictator Moamar Kaddafi have quickly learned how not to appear as a likely target to jets overhead. So NATO fighter-bombers often come back with the four or more smart bombs they went out with.

I think Canada just spent more during these past few weeks bombing Libya, then what was spent in Afghanistan.

Canada would be better off staying out of these wars. But unfortunately, the Canadians are pressured by the US to engage.

What exactly has Libya done to Canada?

Sad.

We have a Bush-Lite Mini-Me in Harper right now. He has just won a majority in Parliament. Believe me, he is all to eager to join the military adventures with little encouragement or arms twisting required.

Libya is a perfect scenario for Nato criminals to flex their muscles. Their Air Defense has been destroyed, they have no Air Force to speak of, so the chance of loss unless it caused by malfunction is virtually nil.

I believe NATO led by the US is taking out more then just the Libyan military targets.

Anyway, we're witnessing some pretty outrageous events the past 20 years. I'm certain future generations will look back at these times with shame.

Sadder would be to stand by and do nothing while maniacal regimes murder their own people.

Kudos to the American Military Industrial Complex of companies for yet another conquest of a country's wealth. The "trillion" dollar war jet Canada bought was a masterful capture of their Defense Department and Government.
Now to have them also drop bombs at tens of thousands of dollars each, for months is another stroke of genius.
The money that these companies capture is astonishing considering all governments are cutting back everywhere else.
Perhaps even more astonishing is that these Governments keep getting re elected. People have no idea what their governments are doing. Pathetic, but true.

Hurray for defence contractors and their almighty lobby!!! They've convinced our puny military to request $130 Million for Libya.

In 2010, Canada was 13th in the world with respect to spending for Armed Forces at $20,164,000,000, the 12th is South Korea. Even though both our neighbours are crazy, I understand their costs...ours...not so much.
