Stanley Name Chosen For Harper Family Cat After Facebook Vote

And The Winning Name For Harper's Cat Is...
Facebook

Meet Stanley, the new feline addition to the Harper family.

The Prime Minister (or his chief typist, at least) announced the winning name for the new cat on Harper's Facebook page Tuesday following an online poll to choose its name. The family had adopted Stanley from the Ottawa Humane Society.

"Stanley is the winning name! Thank you to those who voted," the post says. "We encourage everyone to adopt their animals from the many wonderful animal shelters across the country."

There were more than 10,000 votes for six possible names. Stanley was the clear winner with more than 4,400 votes. Smokie polled second with more than 1,800 votes. The other names were Vingt-quatre, Earl Grey, Griffin and Gandalf.

The Harpers apparently ignored online efforts to name the cat after Brigette DePape, the Senate page who lost her job this week after staging an anti-Harper protest during the Speech from the Throne.

The Harpers are known cat lovers and supporters of a foster program at the Ottawa Humane Society.

They have provided foster care to numerous cats in the past at 24 Sussex Drive.
