Stanley Cup Final: Vancouver And Boston Series Tied At 2 After Bruins Win 4-0

THE CANADIAN PRESS -- BOSTON - The Vancouver Canucks are heading home in search of answers after letting the Boston Bruins back in the Stanley Cup final.

Tim Thomas was unbeatable and Rich Peverley scored twice Wednesday as the Bruins steamrolled Vancouver 4-0, making the NHL's best regular-season team look ordinary for the second straight game and tying the series 2-2.

Boston outscored the Canucks 12-1 in the two games at hostile TD Garden. Alain Vigneault removed starter Roberto Luongo after he surrendered four goals on 20 shots in Game 4 and will now face more questions about whether Luongo or backup Cory Schneider will start Game 5 at Rogers Arena on Friday.

It's far from the only question hovering over the team.

A once potent power play has disappeared as Vancouver failed to convert on six more opportunities and now sits at just 1-for-22 in the series. Two of those situations came in the first period when the Canucks were unable to solve Thomas and grab early momentum.

The team's star players have yet to make much of an impact in the series. Ryan Kesler, who generated Conn Smythe talk heading into the series, has just one assist in four games — which is one more than captain Henrik Sedin.

"We've got to solve Thomas, that's the thing," Sedin said.

The Bruins have been getting contributions throughout their lineup with goals from Michael Ryder and Brad Marchand to go with the pair scored by Peverley.

Thomas has been the best player in black and yellow, allowing just five goals on 146 shots in the series. He made another 38 saves in Game 4.

"Anyone who knows the story of Tim Thomas, he's taken a real bumpy road to get to the NHL" said Bruins coach Claude Julien. "He's had so many obstacles to overcome. It makes him a battler, it makes him the perfect goaltender for our organization."

Julien won his 31st playoff game behind the bench with the Bruins, tying the franchise record set by Don Cherry.

With Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Haper watching from the stands, the Canucks were undone by a poor second period for the second straight game. Goals 2:18 apart by Ryder and Marchand just past the midway point of the game gave Boston a 3-0 lead and elicited derisive chants of "Luuuuuongo" from the energized TD Garden crowd.

The goaltender could have used more help from his teammates.

Ryder's goal at 11:11 came on a long wrist shot that was only dangerous because defenceman Sami Salo was reaching and had it deflect off his stick. Marchand roofed a backhand shot at 13:29 after Keith Ballard was unable to control the puck and Henrik Sedin left him open in front.

During the series, Vancouver has been outscored 8-0 in the middle period.

Another troubling trend is the lack of pushback the Canucks showed after falling behind, losing a number of battles for the puck against a more determined Boston team.

The night got off to a roaring start when Bruins legend Bobby Orr was shown on the scoreboard waving a Nathan Horton flag prior to the game. Horton was knocked out of the series with a concussion by a dangerous hit from Vancouver's Aaron Rome in Game 3.

Peverley, the man who replaced Horton on Boston's top line, opened the scoring at 11:59 of the first period. He took a nice chip pass from David Krejci before racing in alone and sliding the puck through Luongo's legs.

Julien said Peverly responded to the pressure of being elevated to the top line.

"I like his character, he comes to play every day," Julien said. "He's a very serious athlete, he takes care of himself and right now he's being rewarded."

Vancouver had a number of good opportunities to tie it but couldn't solve Thomas, who was at his aggressive best challenging shooters and fighting for position in the crease. He denied a charging Maxim Lapierre towards the end of the period and managed to control the rebound.

Some signs of frustration started to emerge from the Canucks, who had their passionate fanbase partying into the night after taking the first two games of the series on home ice. Henrik Sedin took a long pause before skating to the penalty box after being called for high-sticking early in the third period, giving referees Dan O'Halloran and Kelly Sutherland an earful on the way by.

Peverley's second goal chased Luongo at 3:39 of the third period. He skated hard to the goal and had the puck ricochet in off him after Luongo tried to break up a pass through his crease.

With Schneider entering the game, Bruins fans chanted "We want the Cup! We want the Cup!" — the same thing the Canucks heard at Rogers Arena after Game 2.

The series is now down to a best-of-three. One of the few positives for Vancouver is they don't need to find a way to win in the hostile confines of TD Garden — two more victories on home ice will do the job.

Notes: Tanner Glass replaced Jeff Tambellini in Vancouver's lineup ... Bruins forward Marc Savard, out for the season with a concussion, was given a loud ovation when he was shown on the scoreboard in the first period ... NBA star Steve Nash attended the game. His brother-in-law is Canuks forward Manny Malhotra ... Announced attendance was 17,565.

Don't you think Jet Lag has anything to do with these results. It takes a real professional or professional advisor on how to handle jet lag...to recheck the body clock after a flight eastward.

Meh, they both have to fly and Vancouver should be used to it more than Boston since they have to fly all the time. They played like garbage 2 games in a row, no excuses, because jet lag is an excuse to blow any series.

Maybe playing on hard ice will inspire them.

Never underestimate Vancouver's ability to choke.

Jetlag makes for choking, and not really knowing why.

Vancouver almost gave up a 3-0 series lead in the first round, they can choke for sure. I can't think of the last team to blow a 3-0 lead in a series and lose, that would be crushing. Maybe you can refresh my memory. ;)

The Canucks are toast. Would have love to see a Canadian team win the cup but that will not happen it 2011. Vancouver biggest problem their stupid fans celebrating after games one and two like they already won the cup.

I'm wondering if maybe the cup doesn't really matter to team owners as much as do the revenues from all the crap they can sell in a 7 game series.

The hockey season should have ended 2 months ago. A message to the hundreds of thousands of beer swilling morons that are still watching hockey; It's summer, temperature 80 degrees, get a life!

Actually it's not summer, and playoffs typically extend into the first part of June.

You are calling us morons? Oh how I LOVE irony!
It is NOT summer! And you post on message boards on a subject you know nothing about. Now, who is it that needs a life???

This is getting depressing. The first two games were at least close, but the last two have really shown Boston to be a...I shudder to speak the word...superior team. A 12-1 blowout with the Canucks looking like an amateur version of the Leafs - nobody saw that coming.
Regardless of the 8-10 calls that were totally ignored by the officials, Vancouver seemed like it suffered a concussion as a team and got rocked.
Winning this Cup is going to be about defence and goaltending - something the Canucks have totally lost. Forget about offence, we clearly see who has the upper hand in that battle. I hope they find themselves in Game 5 or this is over in 6!

It'll be back to business in Vancouver on Friday. Chicago thought they had us too. Thomas could still be the difference the rest of the way but if Bruins fans think the Canucks are going to roll over for 2 more games they haven't been paying attention to the Canucks this season.

Go Canucks!

It's the playoffs pal-the "season" has no bearing on it. And love how some people are blaming jet lag for the Canucks terrible play-it would affect the Bruins also.

I don't mind Boston winning. It's the shellacking the Canucks are taking that is worrisome.

They were quoting stats the other day and said that only TWO times in Stanley Cup history has a team come back from 2-0 in the series to win. Let's HOPE that it stays that way :)

The difference here is that the first two games were very close and could have gone either way.

And.....the Horton incident has nothing to do with this IMHO. Rome made a big mistake but I do not think there was any intent to harm to the extent that occurred. There have been other infractions very similar in this series that have gone unpunished. I also believe that this is the last thing that the Canucks would want or condone. I thought Rome's apology was very classy, and I would expect nothing less from a player on a Canadian team. I was watching the game in question and missed the hit as it happened, and came back to find someone being taken from the ice on a stretcher. My first thought was "Please don't let it be a Canuck that was responsible for this." Of course I watched the replay (over and over), and I really don't .think the "intent" was there. It was a late hit, but I don't think he knew he would upend Horton. Hockey is a violent game, and if this incident helps to inform the league and the players what is acceptable and what is not, then that would be a positive thing. The truth is that both these teams are very physical, and it isnt surprising that there is damage going on. I am so glad that Horton is likely to make a full recovery.

I follow hockey 24/7/365 and I am totally amazed by the Bruins. I picked the Canucks to sweep them. In fact I was sure that San Jose or Detroit could also beat them. Man was I wrong!

I picked Boston to play Vancouver in my fantasy pool, so I'm winning that, but what's happening on the ice is unbelievable to me.

Although I live and die with the Sabres, Go Bruins!!!
08:52 AM on 06/09/2011
I think a lot of people are surprised by the Bruins, bw. I know that after the first two games, all I heard was the Canucks will sweep, and the Bruins lost their best chance at winning even one game after game 2. I knew the Bruins had it in them to win at home. With the injury to Horton, it just seemed to spark them even more. Seeing Bobby Orr in the stands waving Nathan Horton's flag was awesome. We have been waiting a LONG time, and have been heartbroken by the Bruins year after year! I am hoping that THIS is FINALLY the year.

GO BRUINS!!!!

This Bruins fan who lives in Vancouver, called it for the Bruins in 6 before the series began.
It could go to 7, but it is anybodies to win at this point.
01:48 AM on 06/09/2011
Bruins are being consistent, Canucks just need to bring their game up to the level of games 1-2 and the 1st period of game 3. Game 4 was like watching slow-mo in comparison to how the canucks played all playoffs. It looks like Kesler and Hank were playing through some injuries so hopefully they can get better by Friday.

I still believe! We've been here before, down 7-2. 5-0 vs chicago, and they came back to win it. Go nucks go!

The thing is, Boston has been here before too, being down to the Canadiens 2-0 and winning the series.

Then it should make for an interesting game 5 as both teams have been 'there' before ;)
