The Globe and Mail:

As the oil and gas industry works to convince Canada's energy regulator that it can safely drill in the Arctic's deep waters, it is proposing some creative -- and controversial -- methods to clean up spills in sea ice: using fires set from helicopters to burn oil and even the propeller blades of icebreakers to disperse it.

This reminds me of the McDonalds coffee case. McDonalds kept getting sued by people who burned themselves while drinking or spilling there coffee. Customers would complain about receiving 3rd degree burns when they spilled there coffee on themselves and would have to receive hospital treatment. Customers made the case that McDonalds was serving their coffee at an unsafe temperature and the first few customers who sued all won the case in court because the court found that McDonalds knew they were serving their coffee at an unsafe level and the court considered it negligence. Instead of changing all the coffee machines in there restaurants McDonalds found it to be cheaper to settle with every burned victim instead of buying new coffee machines. This attitude of not caring about customers and only considering profit left many people with 3rd degree burns for the rest of their lives. Oil companies have the same attitude and will sacrifice the environment or anyone for their own profits and are willing to settle with communities or governments case by case instead of dealing with the root of the problem which is to avoid the risk all together by not drilling in the arctic. There are many other sources of energy out there and most companies don’t want to invest the money to change because they are happy with the way things are.

Removing ourselves from our dependency on oil will free the world from the control of these dictators. BIG oil will do anything to prevent that from happing, the same way every dictator fights to stay in power.

These cleanup plans are absurd. This is reason to deny all permits for drilling.
