A weekend of negotiations failed to produce a settlement to end rotating strikes by Canada Post's urban workers.

THE CANADIAN PRESS -- Canadians may feel the effects of rotating postal strikes to a much greater degree starting this week as cuts to mail delivery take effect.

Canada Post says delivery in most cities will be limited to Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Spokesman Jon Hamilton says a final call will be made today on whether all cities will be affected, based on mail volumes.

Hamilton says a week-and-a-half of rotating strikes have scared customers away and a drop in mail means the post office has no choice but to bring in service cuts.

Postal workers in Red Deer spent the weekend on strike and employees in 10 cities across the country walked off the job next.

Rotating strikes began late Sunday in Corner Brook, N.L., Fredericton, N.B., Breton, N.S., Trois-Rivieres, Que., Sherbrooke, Que., Cornwall, Ont., Windsor, Ont., Niagara Falls, Ont., Regina, Sask. and Nanaimo, B.C.

The two sides spent the weekend negotiating but there is no sign of progress.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has said it's willing to negotiate a reasonable deal but won't accept Canada Post's demands for concessions.

In a weekend statement, the union also said Canada Post management was trying to start negotiations over "from the beginning" and had withdrawn a number of previously tabled proposals.

Here we go again: blaming the workers for incompetent management. The bosses and their lackies drive the business into the ground paying for luxuries and travel and endless meetings, and then try to convince the people who actually do the work that they're extraneous, overpaid and dispensable. Need to save money? fire expensive management!

The CUPW is in the process of destroying itself through ignorant demands along with this strike action. Fire the lot and let us get back to basics.

The Post Office is profitable. If you don't like it, don't use it.

A whole 59 cents to get something delivered cross country, I don't think the PO is in danger of losing any of it's customers.

Put your money where your mouth is. Send your envelopes via FedEx for 14.99 cents to major centres. But remember, any outlying areas are delivered by the PO anyway because FedEx cannot get it there without losing money.

Don't you mean "$14.99"?

I don't see how striking in 10 small cities really has any effect.

i was wondering the same thing myself. why not strike in big cities, like toronto or vancouver? my best guess is that there are too many other options in big metropolitan centres, like fedex, ups, purulator, etc. while the people at canada post are stupid, they aren't stupid enough to welcome the competition with open arms, potentially losing future business. i'm assuming that these other delivery services either don't operate in these small towns, or its bloody expensive to ship there. this truly is a double whammy for these small cities, as they don't have canada post, or any other delivery service. personally, in vancouver, i have no noticed a difference at all.

Wow, how popular is the Canadian section of Huffpost? Regular party in here.

Certainly worth the endless redirection glitches that have not slightly abated since the surprise forced re-directions started. Can't wait until this gets posted so I can go to my home page, click on it and be told "page not found".

Am I right?.....Anyone?....

Lol, sorry I'm just being smart. I'm sure this story will get to at least 15 comments...

I suspect that Huffpo's invasion to Canada will be a massive flop. I can't wait to see how their infiltrations into Brazil and the UK will fly!
