Vancouver Canucks Lose Stanley Cup Finals Game 6: Boston Bruins Win 5-2, Force Game 7

THE CANADIAN PRESS -- VANCOUVER — Vancouver's hopes of a Cup celebration fizzled early Monday.

Everyone was ready for a party — fans in their blue and green, the police and even the provincial government, which closed downtown liquor stores just in case. But the Canucks weren't unable to deliver, stumbling out of the gate and losing 5-2 in Boston to tie the Stanley Cup final at three games apiece.

Now it all comes down to Game 7, back home at Rogers Arena on Wednesday.

"You gotta believe, that's all there is to it," said 18-year-old Brayden Goodman as he tried to cheer glum friends.

"You bring it in our city, we win the game. We're the best team in the league — we'll show the world."

"I think they want to win it back here in Vancouver," said Bill Derbyshire, who was in from William's Lake, B.C., just to watch the game.

The Bruins reeled off early goals from Brad Marchand, Milan Lucic, Andrew Ference and Tomas Kaberle to continue the trend of home dominance in the series.

Vancouver pulled goalie Roberto Luongo for Cory Schneider at 3-0 at 8:35 of the first period, but that didn't stop the scoring spree. At the other end, Boston's Tim Thomas was perfect as Boston led 4-0 after the second period of Game 6 of the Stanley Cup final.

"Tim Thomas is out of his mind," tweeted Canadian basketball star Steve Nash, who was at the game.

The Canucks rallied in the third with a goal from Henrik Sedin just 22 seconds in. Jannik Hansen thought he made it 4-2 but the puck bounced off the post. David Krejci restored the Bruins' four-goal lead on a two-man advantage before Maxim Lapierre scored late to cut the lead to 5-2.

On Vancouver streets, hundreds of police officers patrolled crowds to keep liquor consumption under control while fans watched on giant screens or in bars.

Even the weather co-operated, with the sun peaking out at game time — 5 p.m. local — after an overcast day of sporadic showers.

But the skies soon returned to overcast, reflecting the mood of the crowd. Many left after the first-period debacle.

Despite nerves frayed from two previous humiliating defeats in Beantown, fans kept it positive before the puck dropped by spiking beachballs, donning flags as capes and making giant chalk drawings of the team logo.

In a bid to keep the festivities under control, the provincial government ordered 19 liquor stores to close early — at 4 p.m. — in downtown Vancouver. They had remained open as usual during the opening two games of the final in Vancouver.

"This was done during the Olympics, and there was an immediate reduction of alcohol-related violence and disorder," Solicitor General Shirley Bond said in a statement.

There were an estimated 100,000 fans in the streets for Game 5 Friday and more were expected Monday.

"Alcohol consumption on the streets and public intoxication reached an unacceptable level on Friday, and we have a responsibility to ensure everyone can enjoy public events and celebrations in a safe manner," Brown said.

"Let's show the world once again that British Columbians know how to celebrate in a safe and responsible manner," she added.

Const. Jana McGuinness said police poured out about 3,000 bottles during Friday's game.

"We didn't see anything like that in the Olympics," she said. "The highest pour outs were 1,800. So liquor is a big issue and we're going to stay on top of it tonight."

As in previous games, the city of Vancouver closed some streets in the downtown core to allow crowds to watch the action on big-screen TVs.

While bars looked forward to another Canucks-generated bonanza, The Bay prepared for victory sales.

The Bay's flagship downtown department store planned to have "thousands of commemorative T-shirts available for purchase in the event of an historic Vancouver win" immediately after the game. The store was slated to remain open until 11 p.m. local time in case of a Cup-clinching victory.

Meanwhile, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and others started weighing in on the cost of the Canucks party.

The city has already spent about $1.3 million on policing and outdoor public events like giant TV screens to broadcast games, and it would like Victoria and Ottawa to pitch in to cover the costs.

Premier Christy Clark said if the Canucks win the Stanley Cup, the provincial government would help Vancouver pay for the celebration but policing costs would be up to the city.

Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore said in Ottawa prior to the game that the city hadn't made any request for help.

And asked if Ottawa would chip in for a parade, he replied: "Well, I suppose we'll cross that bridge but any discussion of anything like that after the moment has happened would be jinxing it and shame on you for tempting that."

The Vancouver Fire Department said fire prevention officers would be checking bars to guard against overcrowding and to ensure fire safety.

The Canucks are looking to become the first Canadian champions since Montreal in 1993.

Canucks played well after the horrible first period.
Bruins are looking more and more like goons.

Hope they are carried away with themselves and feeling untouchable....that's a sure way to fall flat on your face in Vancouver.
11:35 AM on 06/18/2011
Obviously you didn't watch the game, you've been on Vancouver fan pages. And speaking of falling on their faces, did you happen to catch what the Vancouver fans did after the game? The fact is Boston is a remarkable sports city; Patriots, Redsox, Celtics and now finally, my Bruins. Not sure where you're from but I'm guessing you're not from Boston. Bitterness makes all us fans sleep so much better at night. Oh, one other thing...go on YouTube and see the video where Vancouver fans surround two Bruins fans and literally beat him. When his girlfriend tries to make them stop, a Vancouver fan hits her in the face and down she goes. Yeah, Vancouver is all class!

Strange that that comment showed up here??!!
I made that comment after game 6
Most of the Bruins are Canadian anyway....
The riots were shameful.... but most people 100,000 plus were peaceful and horrified by what too place
Congrats to the Bruins...they were the better team
Don't know what happened to canucks......?
But I am glad it';s over.

Not exactly an exemplary display of playoff hockey (especially after some of the other series to get here) ... but it is fun wearing my bruins jersey cheering for vancouver ... gotta love summer hockey!

It was ugly, but I'll take it. At least the Canucks were so far out of it that they stayed upright (for the most part). They knew it was going to take more than one power play goal to win that game.

I'm not particularly crazy about either team. I started out leaning to the Canucks, but they don't deserve the cup. They've been blown away in Boston and their home games could have gone either way. To me a Stanley Cup team rises from adversity. The Canucks don't. They completely lose composure when they fall behind. They take mindless penalties and get sucked in by the Bruins. They might squeek out a win in game 7, but they still will have been outplayed overall by Boston.

As a Canadian, I was disgusted by the Boston rabble tonight.
I used to think that the Boston Gardens had had true hockey fans, but what was up with the inane chanting of "Let's go Boston" when a badly injured player for m the Canucks was pretty much getting carried off the ice.
Where I'm from, we cheer any injured player going off the ice, no matter what jersey they're wearing.
Boston lost a lot of respect tonight.
Tacky!

I think it's just exasperation, B's fan are tire to see Nucks players (the Sedin, Burrow, lapierre...) dive, have unbelievable pain in front of the ref then go back as normal. But it's unfortunate that Raymond pays for it, it was an ugly injury, hope it's not too serious

and Go B's!

On the flip side Canucks fans are tired of constant cheap shots and punches to the head between plays, or having Bruins flick pucks at Luongo while he is stretching before the game, yet if an injured Bruin stands to leave the ice he would get cheered guaranteed. The stories coming back of Canuck fans being assaulted in Boston are brutal.. and this is after wins. I don't get it.

Did you watch the game when Horton went down? If you don't follow and watch all the games and the interaction between both teams, then you can't comment. It's like playing the lottery one time because it's millions of dollars. You need to understand the sport and follow it consistently. You can't make a comment like that when you tune in for the last game.

Actually, I watch hockey alot and have been following the Canucks since 76, or 77 when I was old enough to understand what was going on.
1. Mason Raymond was hit in Boston on Monday night- not game 7. I've watched the entire series, and as many playoff games, and regular season games as life allows.
2. It is ALWAYS classless to boo or mock an injured player.

Don't be so sure that Luongo learned anything from that. He had been humiliated twice in Boston (three times now), and still thought he was outplaying Thomas. He's not the sharpest stick on the ice.

In this series, both teams have looked like different teams when they play on the road as compared to playing at home.

As unusual as that is, I don`t see any reason to believe the trend won`t continue on Wednesday.

go bruins go !!!!!!

if canucks win...it will be the biggest steal in stanley cup.....
a team that consistently loses by huge margins... against hawks first and now the bruins.... -- they are definitely no champions...

In case you don`t understand mathematics, here is a lesson for you: it only takes one goal to win the cup. And Vancouver has proven they can win games that way, especially in their rink. Does game 5 ring a bell for you?

Don`t break out the champagne just yet.

I'll be honest, I'm a Canadian and I'm pulling for the Bruins out of spite. I'm sick of other Canadians pulling for a team they don't like all year just because they're from Canada.

Sorry, as a goalie myself. Luongo didn't bring it.

Goal#1: Too deep in his net.
Goal#2: He gets a piece but not enough. Bad goal. He had to stop that.
Goal#3: He's totally rattled and lost the angle, slides too far to the left and he gets beat cleanly to the blocker side.

All bad goals. Canucks need to hope that Luongo' statistical advantage at home still holds. [10 W, 3 L; 1.70 GAA; .943 SV%]

The real question: IF the Canucks lose game 7, what do you do? Luongo has 11 more years on his contract and is now untrade-able. Schneider looked good.

11:37 PM on 06/13/2011
Luongo has given up a total of 1 goal in the 3 games in Vancouver. But the Bruins have outscored the Canucks 19 - 8 in the first 6 games of this series. You can`t win if you can`t score.

Yes, Thomas has been lights out. But both Montreal and Tampa Bay got to Thomas for as many goals as the Bruins scored on them in their playoff series

If it wasn`t for Luongo`s play on home ice, Boston would`ve already won the Cup.The Canucks have no choice. They have to start Luongo in game 7.

Vancouver`s problem is not Luongo`s play in Boston. Vancouver`s problem is their vaunted offense has yet to show up for any game in this series so far.
