THE CANADIAN PRESS -- HALIFAX - A donation from Sidney Crosby has helped Nova Scotia's largest children's hospital expand and renovate a lounge used by teen patients.

The hockey superstar dropped by the lounge Wednesday at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax. He spent two hours talking to young patients and staff during the low-key event.

"It was a really special day for the kids," Brad Jacobs, vice-president of development for the IWK Foundation, said Thursday.
Jacobs said the lounge was improved after children submitted ideas to make it more fun and comfortable.

"The whole idea behind the lounge is to give kids a chance to escape from the reason they are in-patients at the IWK ... and do things that kids normally do when they're home," he said.

"When you walk into the room, you don't feel like you're in a hospital."

The room includes a pool table, air hockey table, big-screen TV, video games, a reading nook, a kitchen -- and a framed, autographed hockey jersey from Crosby.

The Pittsburgh Penguins centre grew up in nearby Cole Harbour, N.S.

Crosby has been to the hospital before. He carried the Stanley Cup from room to room after the Penguins won it in 2009.

When you make more than $10 million a year, giving away $20k to sick children and having the announcement of it syndicated to more than 365 news outlets is hardly what I call real philanthropy or relative munificence. Like when he bought children equipment "valued at $40k" he left a blazing 87 behind as a reminder. For those of you who are being fooled what "valued at" actually means is they took the highest retail value of it to inflate his tax donation receipt but he bought it in bulk if he paid for it at all. Now given the amount of publicity he has received for that donation any good marketer will tell you it was "promotion on the cheap". Try to get 365 news outlets to advertise you and see what it costs.
As for Sidney Crosby always behaving himself in public, that is also a big fat lie. Even players who have been on his team will tell you that there is a massive publicist machine that includes Internet shills and black hat SEOs and burly, blustering body guards protecting his image. I for one don't buy that image anymore as I now know differently.
In 3 years he makes two visits to his local children's hospital and he is a hero? Nice people with a lot less resources do a whole lot more for others in a week. Lets not blow this out of proportion people.

Good on ya Crosby! I have had a family member in the IWK some time ago, thankfully no longer!
The kids will enjoy the expansion!
