THE CANADIAN PRESS -- VANCOUVER - Doctors have determined that a University of British Columbia student whose eyes were gouged in an attack during a trip home to Bangladesh won't see again.

Rumana Monzur, a 33-year-old graduate student, was attacked in June during a trip home to Dhaka, Bangladesh, and her husband is now in custody.

She returned to Vancouver earlier this month for medical treatment, but a statement from the university says after four surgeries, doctors have determined her injuries cannot be repaired.

In the statement, Monzur says she's grateful for the medical care she's received, and she asks for prayers as she and her family adjust to the diagnosis.

Monzur returned to Canada with her father about two weeks ago, and her mother and daughter are expected to join her soon.

The university has been raising money to cover Monzur's medical and living expenses, and has so far raised $61,000 towards its goal of $70,000.
