Oslo, Utoya, Norway Attacks: Anders Behring Breivik's Manifesto Includes Verbatim Unabomber Writing Passages

Anders

DENVER - Parts of the manifesto written by the suspect in Norway's terrorist attack were taken almost word for word from the writings of "Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski.

The passages copied by Anders Behring Breivik appear in the first few pages of Kaczynski's manifesto. Breivik changed a Kaczynski screed on leftism and what he considered to be leftists' "feelings of inferiority" — mainly by substituting the words "multiculturalism" or "cultural Marxism" for "leftism."

For instance, Kaczynski wrote: "One of the most widespread manifestations of the craziness of our world is leftism, so a discussion of the psychology of leftism can serve as an introduction to the discussion of the problems of modern society in general."

Breivik's manifesto reads: "One of the most widespread manifestations of the craziness of our world is multiculturalism, so a discussion of the psychology of multiculturalists can serve as an introduction to the discussion of the problems of Western Europe in general."

Breivik did not cite Kaczynski, though he did for many other people whose writings he used in his 1,500-word manifesto.

He used at least one portion verbatim: "Feminists are desperately anxious to prove that women are as strong and capable as men. Clearly they are nagged by a fear that women may NOT be as strong and as capable as men."

Breivik is accused of killing at least 93 people Friday by setting off an explosion in downtown Oslo and then gunning down young campers on a nearby island. Kaczynski is serving a life sentence in federal prison in Colorado for mail bombs that killed three people and injured 23 others across the U.S. from the 1970s to the 1990s.

Former FBI Agent Terry Turchie, who supervised the federal task force to capture the Unabomber, said Sunday that he saw similarities between the two men.

"They seem to have this anger, the loner aspect, this desire to look back at the way things were and think of themselves as self-reliant," said Turchie, who wrote "Hunting the American Terrorist: The FBI's War on Homegrown Terror" in 2007.

"The real problem is these loners are much more difficult to find and prevent from killing people than other kinds of terrorists," he said.

I wonder if 'right-wing' groups are now going to take more responsibility for their rhetoric?
12:03 PM on 07/25/2011
how revealing, the jerusalem post decides for europeans what the issue should be:

'It would be wrongheaded... to allow the fact that this terrible tragedy was perpetrated by a right-wing extremist to detract attention from the underlying problems faced not only by Norway, but by many Western European nations,' being, as the Jerusalem Post suggests: multiculturalism, or to put it plainly in racist terms: Arabs.

Apparently the title picker didn't know the meaning of verbatim, or didn't read the article.... I'm gonna go one step further,,,,a group of some kind, feeding all these snippits of hatred into the unknown group, brainwashing until the susceptible act, which has its own agenda-worldwide. A conspiracy, good for a book anywa or a dozen articles anyway. It would be easily done on the net.

The word terrorist has been used too much since 9-11 and it has been here. I believe the man is a sociopath not a terrorist and should be dealt with accordingly....God Bless the victim's families.

If you want to define "terrorist" in its original usage, it was "fighters for stateless groups," and so you would be correct. Now it seems to be used to describe anyone who commits an extremely heinous act.

I never liked "terrorist" in its original usage, but certainly you are right there is a distinction between that and how it is often used, and with Breivik.

Actually, the media is the best allie terrorism has.

the definition of the american army is clear about terrorism. According to the Department of Defense, terrorism is

"calculated use of unlawful violence or threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological."

now, in this case, the definition fits perfectly. the norwegian murderer is a -- according to himself christian fundamentalist -- terrorist.

He killed until he ran out of ammo . The Norwegians are cowards . Why didn't the adults shield these children ? Not one policeman was injured .
08:09 AM on 07/25/2011
You mean adults at a camp for young people—not children? They're not cowards. Not all the bodies have been discovered and further there were very few adults and possibly only one security guard at the camp.

The man was dressed as a police officer. The kids ran TO him. There was no shielding them because he was pretending to be a cop.

usmc32yr. Have you stopped to think about who may be reading your comments? Have you stopped to think about the impact your words would have on the families of the victims or the survivors. you need to read a little before you post because guards were the first to be killed on the island

you are revictimizing the victims and you are giving credence to the old saying....Ugly American

Solitary confinement for life. Death would be too good but put into a 4 walled room with nothing but a bunk, sink and toilet 23 hours per day for the next several decades is better than this guy deserves but still shows humanity he had no character to possess

Question 1: Why only 23 hours a day? Question 2: Why waste a lifetime of resources (Food, shelter, clothing and medical care.) maintaining a pathology when the same resources could be used for those in need?

08:29 AM on 07/25/2011
Unfortuately, the most severe penalty Norway imposes is 21 years in jail.
09:10 AM on 07/25/2011
BUT, is the 21 years in jail PER OFFENSE? and if not maybe they can get him for 2 seperate offenses, the bombing and the shooting? At least that would equal 42 and this guys 32 years old so he'd at least be 74 when he got out.

You can argue that this man killed for religious cultural and political beliefs. But no matter how logical or convincing is your argument on the subject nothing justifies the the mass murder of children.
06:17 AM on 07/25/2011
Sounds like you're searching for a way to do just that...justify the mass murder of children.

I do believe the important point ptan points toward is that the words are just bluster in relation to the underlying cause for a mass murder of children....recognizing those underlying causes can help us prevent further mass murdering of children...let us hope...and work toward that end.
10:04 AM on 07/25/2011
It is amazing how you twist what was just said by the guy above. wow. Nothing justifies the mass murder of children. Put succinctly, nothing justifies the murder of children. Nothing justifies mass murder. Either is correct.

After 50 years of the maple tree America and the world at large being tapped and sucked dry by the socialist agenda, I am afraid that what we are seeing in so called terrorism is just the beginning. All this blab on this post about the right leaning further right... as a lifelong observer the right side of the isle stands where it has for the past 50 years... compromise and complacent trying to protect private industry (where the real wealth comes from), always trying to keep their values in place to no avail, as the socialist have been sucking this country and the world dry for generations and decades. Add up the score sheets... create the definitive list of whom truly has affected our economic set of circumstances and our prosperity, and you will wonder why we have not imploded as a society as of yet. We the people, the backbone of society, the ones paying all the freight who have been pushed to the brink, will one day rise... and those on the lefts gravy train and the rest of the socialist will call us all the names they like! They will never take responsibility for waking the sleeping beast!

Where we are headed in the hands of Obama and his Marxist Regime, you will wish you were in the 50's before it is over. The only thing pathetic are these left leaning Huffington Post Blogs and Obama supporters that just don't get it. Don't worry comrade, you will get it when you discover that the marxist consider you just another obstacle. You will be among those crying the loudist wishing you were anywhere but there!

In Norway, the maximum sentence this person will receive is 21 years!
02:07 AM on 07/25/2011
The Supreme Court of Justice in Norway and change the sentence to the maximum for each count. and have them served consecutively. that is why when the DA lists charges of someone killing a person with their car they also throw in the seat belt violation and driving without a licence. at times the extra charges can affect a sentence.

Lets see what Oslo's government decides.

This was a very very sad and terrable tragity that should never of happened. My heart goes out to all the victoms and their families.

Breivek was clearly insane. Some people are born that way. Sometimes Heaven makes someone go nuts. All that drivel about politics is irrelevant. This was a guy with violent tendencies which he used on innocent people. Whatever he mentioned about politics isn't as important as the fact that he couldn't control his anger. I don't like certain political figures, but if I do ever go crazy I don't want anyone to think that my philosophies had anything to do with it. So he wrote some stuff down once. It has little to do with anything.

What is interesting in the writing is that he carries on a continual critic of people who he deems weak in some fashion. You're right that the political labels have less relevance, they're the projection target, like most of us do, of the frustrations of our personal perceptions of our own short comings.
11:51 PM on 07/24/2011
Breivik was deeply opposed to the Islamification of Europe. In other words he spoke openly & felt deeply about an issue that most policy makers in Europe feel likewise but being trapped in their far left ideology can't openly say it. They have opened Pandora's box & do not know how to cope. The aggressive & brash will rule while the passive mourn their past..
11:39 PM on 07/24/2011
Quote from Breivik:

He said that socialism was breaking down traditions, culture, national identity and other societal structures and that this in turn made society weak and confused.

Sounds eerily familiar with what most of us feel is happening right here in our nation. Breivik may have been a lunatic for acting out his feelings but his philosophy is not that far fetched..

"...May have been a lunatic for acting out his feelings...." But his ideology is right on. Yeah, right lets return to the days when everyone drank from the rightly labled water fountain. Sicko is the followers of sick ideology, always has been always will be. Breivik is a criminal and I find your attempt to justify his thinking that lead to his acts almost as criminal.

In your Socialized state, he will get 21 years for killing 94 people!

Unfortunately, what you say makes sense... How far will they push before they get the results they are looking for. For every action, there is a reaction.
