Feds Silence Scientist Over West Coast Salmon Study

The Vancouver Sun:

VANCOUVER — Top bureaucrats in Ottawa have muzzled a leading fisheries scientist whose discovery could help explain why salmon stocks have been crashing off Canada's West Coast, according to documents obtained by Postmedia News.
The documents show the Privy Council Office, which supports the Prime Minister's Office, stopped Kristi Miller from talking about one of the most significant discoveries to come out of a federal fisheries lab in years.

This is an example as to why the Harper government should be over thrown immediately.

I hope the public is taking note. Harper and his illuminatis strike again. Science is muzzled so the truth will not surface. As mentioned in some previous comments, the health of salmon is one of the best indicators of the health of coastal ecosystems. But according to Harper, let's just move along, as there is nothing to see here.

Since Harper was elected, he has baffled worker's rights to collectively bargain on two occasions, has prevented Toronto artist Franke James to exhibit her art in Europe, and has withdrawn two gorgeous canadian landscape paintings in the Foreign Affairs building and replaced it with a photo of the Queen. He also has studies dating back a few years showing the one of our country's main arteries, the Champlain Bridge, is decrepit to the point of being potentially dangerous.

I do not like to use this analogy, but I feel my country is being raped. Can we have a recall election as they do down in Wisconsin?

All "government" money is "taxpayer money" and unless there is national security at risk any research done on OUR behalf should be published without gov't interference. Harper's need to "contro;l" everything is nothing short of hiding the truth or massaging it so it becomes nothing more than propaganda.

People need to VOTE in this country and become more actively involved in the selection of candidates.

This is typical of both Harper's GeorgeW-like antigovernment agenda and the salmon farming industry through history.

Starting in Norway in the 70s and proceeding through Scotland, Ireland, Eastern Canada. and now the West Coast, wild salmon and salmonid populations have collapsed following the creation of salmon fish farms.

The multinational fish farming conglomerates have followed traditional big industry techniques - denial, tame pro-farming 'scientific' studies, ad campaigns, and so on to blunt attacks from those who make the connection and the megacorps have largely succeeded in their effort.

As usual, buying politicians has been the most effective tool in their box and the Harper crowd is VERY pro corporate.

History speaks for itself but science backs it up and explains it. Search on Dr. Jennifer S. Ford, Alexandra Morton, or simply 'impact of salmon farming on wild salmon' to find studies not censored by the Harperites.

Here in BC, salmon are suddenly hard to find and it's a crying shame as its still not too late to save the salmon runs.

Simple major steps include closed container farming and moving the fish farms away from known salmon migration routes.

Wild salmon is a huge source of revenue for the west coast not only as a local food source but also as a highly desired export and for the tourist revenue from sport fisherman. People need to stop buying farmed salmon and to frequent restaurants that serve wild, sustainable fish products.

The health of salmon is one of the best indicators of the health of coastal ecosystems. The revenue received from polluting and cross contaminating industries will never offset the long term health costs and diminishing food supply for humans and wildlife. We learned from the diminishing eagle populations , the dangers of DDT. Now we must understand why the salmon are having such difficulty. Good for Huffington for posting this article.

Harper is a fundie. He believes in the biblical prophecies of Armageddon. And is apparently attempting to make it a reality. You know, so he can sit beside his imaginary friend after he dies.

Why would Harper listen to a scientist when he can get the goods directly through prayer?

Hardly a surprise. Stephen Harper is a dangerous man, and doesn't think too highly of any version of the truth which isn't his.

The Cons are consistently anti-science, anti-environment and anti-conservation, all of which are opposed by their far-right religious ideologies.
Doesn't help the ordinary citizens much though, unfortunately.
