ROME - An Italian parliamentary commission Tuesday approved a draft law banning women from wearing veils that cover their faces in public.

The draft passed by the constitutional affairs commission would prohibit women from wearing a burka, niqab or any other garb that covers the face in such circumstances.

Third parties who force women to cover their faces in public would be fined euro30,000, or about $41,000 Cdn, and face up to 12 months in jail, the news agency ANSA said.

The law was sponsored by Souad Sbai, a Moroccan-born member of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's conservative Freedom People party.

ANSA said the opposition voted against the law.

The draft will be forwarded to parliament after the summer recess.

The preliminary approval was welcomed by legislator Barbara Saltamartini, vice-president of the Freedom People party caucus in the lower house.

"Final approval will put an end to the suffering of many women who are often forced to wear the burka or niqab, which annihilates their dignity and gets in the way of integration," Saltamartini said in a statement.

The Burqa has no place in a western open society...

It suggests distrust of the wearer and the public...

Agreed. It's also a security hasard.

Let's just ban all head gear. I'd be OK with that. This includes Pope hats.

Maybe they should ban people's wearing crosses, the kippah, or other articles of faith as well.

So instead of being forced to wear a burqa these poor women will be forced to stay at home. That's the only logical choice for these people bound by their religious doctrine.

It is reasonable , in a free society, to request it citizenry to
be identifiable in public.
The problem is that these persons come from societies that are not free.

Some women choose to wear burqas in accordance to their religion - they are not all forced. Should they be punished for this?

You're right. By wearing the Burqa, they are already being punished enough. How anyone can defend this inhumane, sexist, mysoginistic practice is unfathomable.

You are correct that many women choose to wear a burqas but I don't believe it is about religion as much it is about culture. There are many Muslim women that don't wear any head coverings at all.
