NEW YORK, N.Y. - Research In Motion is unveiling five new BlackBerrys with touchscreens, as it hopes to revive the line's dwindling appeal in the face of competition from the iPhone and Android smartphones.

The new phones had been expected earlier this year, but were delayed. Those delays have weighed heavily on Research In Motion Ltd.'s (TSX:RIM) stock price, which is at its lowest level since 2006.

RIM, which is based in Waterloo, Ontario, is updating its high-end Bold models to include touchscreens. It's also launching two Torch models with no physical keyboards.

The phones run a new version of the BlackBerry operating system, which RIM says run much faster.

AT&T Inc. said it would launch one of new Torch models this month, and another Torch and Bold model later this year.

Rim thought, since everyone had their phone, they could pump out the same old tech and people would keep buying it. Aplles Iphone, and the Android made amazing innovations, creating new and exciting technologies available to everyone. Rim was caught flat footed, now they are racing to catch up to the competition. As more and more buisness's and government agencies move to the Iphone and Android, Rim will find it harder and harder to retain its standing in the industry. Maybe, instead of focusing on buying a hockey team, the Genius's at Rim should have been working to outpace the competition.

Well that's dissapointing. If they were to release a new blackberry that you can control using only your mind then I'd be totally on board!

What a concept. No little mechanical buttons and sliders. Who would have thought.

Where are the people who insisted that NO ONE would ever want to type without physical keyboards?

I hate virtual keyboards. I just can't type with them.

I am with you. I have a Galaxy S for personal and a Blackberry Curve for work.

A soft keyboard or voice transcription is nice for short messages, but to type an email with any detail I need the hard keyboard on my Blackberry.
