Malnourished Huskies
Animal rights advocates say they have found 37 malnourished dogs chained to trees on a property northwest of Montreal.

LACHUTE, Que. - Animal rights advocates say they have found 37 malnourished dogs chained to trees on a property northwest of Montreal.

The Huskies were discovered Saturday in a wooded area near Lachute, Que. after the advocates received a tip about their condition.

Diane Gallant, a member of the group World Event to End Animal Cruelty, said the dogs were hungry and thirsty and appeared to have been chained up for a long time.

The Huskies ranged in age from eight months to 10 years, she said.

"I'm a dog lover," Gallant said Sunday. "I don't think a dog should spend its whole life chained to a tree with a five-foot chain...They are basically just sleeping in their poo and their pee."

Gallant said she spoke with the owner of the dogs, who lives nearby and appeared unable to properly care for them.

Quebec government spokeswoman Helene Sauvageau said the local SPCA is also working on the case.

Sophie Fournier, another animal rights activist who visited the site near Lachute, said they've found homes for seven dogs but about 30 still remain.

Their condition is not good, said Fournier, who runs Sophie's Dog Adoption in Montreal. "The majority of them are extremely skinny."

But the situation in Lachute points to a larger problem in Quebec, Gallant said.

Quebec has long been considered the puppy mill capital of North America, with an estimated 800 unregulated breeding operations in Montreal alone.

The province is in the process of introducing new animal welfare regulations designed to crack down on puppy and kitten mills in the province.

The rules would include minimum standards of care and cleanliness and norms for euthanizing unwanted pets.

ANIMAL RIGHTS ADVOCATES we must spread the word and educate the public, demand legislation to protect animals and force our lawmakers to punish the perpetrators of the ongoing heinous abuse. A post here is not enough. Let your assemblyman and senator know you have the vote to appoint someone else.

Yes, the world is getting worse ...you can have other priorities. However, you can REPORT cruelty (to people as well as animals) on the phone.

And CANADA, you are disgusting. Look the other way eh? Don't make waves unless it is for your own benefit. After all the Maritimes earn their living by barbaric seal butchery, over fishing, and you still sell asbestos to countries without environmental protection.

Please...consider supporting just one organization to help stop animal suffering.

Not sure what country YOU're in, but if it's the US, just check out factory farm videos before you call OTHER countries barbaric!!

Quebec has always been a bastion of animal cruelty. Things might have improved since I grew up there, but it always sickened me how there almost seemed to be a culture of abuse in that province.

Québec is a bastion of all things bad, and that is a well known fact!

You are so lucky you escaped that dreadful place.

I got dog people envy. He was at the SPCA andthe price I paid for him was almost nothing given that the price included neutering, a needle, a leash and collar and a chip. People ask me what breed he is and I say he is an SPCA Supremo. One woman said she had never heard of that breed!

We got ours from a shelter. he was physically abused the first year of his life and is paranoid about being hurt but is terribly loyal to us and any kid who wants to rub his belly. Mixed black lab/? People ask if he is a pure Lab and we say "no, he is a long nosed black North American Galumper. Very rare breed. Best dog we have ever had and for the price, as you say, he came with everything.

Faved.

The little one in my Avatar is a stray that jumped on my partner lap as he was parking , two months ago - the poor thing was covered in oil and ticks, and was dehydrated and starving - when I took him to the vet, she said he wasn't older than 6 months as his milk canines were just about to fall out. He was scared of about everything

Now, although he get nervous around some things (such as a broom), and has the occasional relapse into panic, he's blossomed and spends half his time playing doggie games with my lab girl in the picture, and catch-me-if-you-can and wrestling with Mr. Mandu, the cat.

Sometimes there's a terrible disconnect between people and animals. What a shame that those are sometimes the people who end up with 37 dogs tied to trees.

Huff Post, it would be nice if this kind of article gave us more information so we could help by posting the information forward on some of the other social medias to help find homes or adoptive families for these dogs.

The penalties for cruelty to animals is much too light. Five years in prison is about right.

Let's make it five years per animal abused and per incident of abuse. It takes a psychopath to treat animals this way and they should be taken out of circulation before they start going after people.

With all the animals in shelters in North America (especially in the American southeast), puppy mills should be eliminated all together ... I have a resuce from one in Atlanta and she was nearly bred to death ... now she sleeps under my covers, cuddles on the sofa ... but every once in a while, when she hears a noise with which she isn't familiar she shakes from terror ..

Bless your heart. Rescue dogs always come with baggage. I have an eskie that was malnourished, and left to die in an abandoned house with her own 2 month old puppy when she was just 9 months old herself. She has HUGE trust issues, but once she trusts you, she will love you until the end. And I wouldn't give her up for anything.

Rescue dogs DO come with damage, sometimes stuff they can't get over until very late in life.

I commend you for your patient and honor to this creature that most people would find beyond hope. It's a rare trait.

All my pets have been rescue animals, some terribly abused, but they've stayed with me for their life. This has been horribly inconvenient and expensive at times but I made a commitment to them at the time and never broke that commitment, not once.

I have a soft spot for damaged creatures that deserve a chance. Don't tell anyone or it will ruin my reputation.

having pets is like having kids you need to care for them not euthanizing them

F&F. why is that SO hard for people to understand? They wouldn't give up a difficult child, but animals are disposable?

I reluctantly gave up two exes (cheating, hitting, abusive, etc) but have never found need to get rid of any of my rescue pets.

Does that say something about the exes or me?
