Harper Bathroom Break In Brazil: PMO Denies Report Of Potty Tantrum

Day 49

SAO PAULO - Talk of a diplomatic tiff is heating up Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Latin American tour, but officials insist everything is cool.

The Brazilian newspaper Folha reported Tuesday that Harper angered the country's president and her aides Monday by locking himself in a bathroom until Brazilian officials agreed to hold staged toasts before lunch rather than after.

Harper's officials flatly denied the report, dismissing it as "ridiculous tabloid journalism."

Spokesman Dimitri Soudas said the plan was always to do the toasts off the top and denied any problems with the Brazilians over the timing.

"I've checked. This story is false," he said. "Bottom line guys, when these things happen it's because the team is fighting for you guys so you can get access."

A Brazilian Foreign Ministry official also denied the report.

"That's absolutely incorrect. It never happened," Carlos de Abreu said. "There was good chemistry between both delegations."

He said Harper went to the bathroom for "regular reasons."

"It is something that every human being has to do every now and then. Nobody would have negotiated that (whether to have toasts before or after.)"

However, journalists noted tension between Canadian and Brazilian officials during Monday's photo-ops with Harper and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.

The Brazilians barred journalists from the opening moments of a meeting between the two, then allowed media in for the end of the meeting.

At lunch, journalists were told they would be allowed to cover the toasts before the meal began. But again they were barred from the room as Canadian officials frantically negotiated with the Brazilians. The journalists were finally rushed in just in time to catch the toasts.

Word of the alleged discord came as Harper courted Brazilian business leaders Tuesday, saying he wants to get "friendlier" — especially when it comes to trade.

Harper is on a four-country tour of Latin America in an effort to boost trade and strengthen relations.

He,he ... Harper kicked the lefty rump so damn hard and deep this spring they're still feeling the reverb.

Harper's provided solid leadership. The insane clown posse left is just sore he has deftly managed to keep their media at an arms length to lessen its ability to bend the facts. Canadians recognize that fact, understand it and are applauding it. They want more!

If the source of information is Brazilian newspaper Folha, Canadians can rest assured it's a hoax. Folha is just a lousy tabloid. In 2010 presidential elections, they've published in their first page a entirely false criminal record of candidate Dilma Rousseff. They even photoshopped and lied saying they got the document in the National Archives, when in fact it was sent to them by an ordinary ultra-conservative blogger. It took them 3 weeks to admit the farse, and they only did it after an official investigation concluded it was false.

They've been condemned dozens of times for publishing false news. They've destroyed the life of an innocent couple who owned an elementary school in Sao paulo, accusing them of pedophilia without checking the facts, with bases in an anonymous dennounce - which turned to be false. They accused a Brazilian teacher of comitting act of "marxist terrorism" during the military regime in Brazil - when in fact, the women was living in exile in Europe.

They don't even check basic facts like chronology before publishing anything they get told (or invent). Just ignore it.

I'm not a big fan of Harper, but this should not affect his image. It's a non story.

Not quite the smooth camaraderie and respectful cooperation that we used to see all the time in the Trudeau years is it? Mind you, Trudeau knew the customs and history of the countries he went to visit. I suspect Mr Harper and his entourage is far less familiar.

Being PM is a big job. He logs a lot of time in the trenches and strains himself till he's red in the face. He poo-poos all of his critics and pinches off those who hang around getting in his way. He flushes out Canada's problems and makes a big noise on the international scene. He won't stir the pot without sniffing the air and refuses to dump all over foreign leaders. He's a PM who knows his duty.

Oh, he locked the door alright.

He does that all the time just ahead of scheduled "Photo-Ops".

He was in there lathering up his hair with DIPPITY-DO styling gel in preparation of photo-ops.

That is the same reason his Youtube video with Ford was yanked because the video was OUTDOORS and he didn't get a chance to DIPPITY-DO his hair. His aides showed him the outdoor portapotti but there was no mirror in it. So he has ordered up a Prime Ministerial Motor Home so that he does not encounter that situation again.

Brazil has become a big powerhouse in recent years, they have big mining interests in the Sudbury area through Vale and control of much of the beer we drink. Embracer is the direct and main competitor to Bombardier

Very touchy situation with the Bomber and Embracer, for both countries..
I was in Rio last Dec and the place is booming, stayed on the Copacabana beach, signs all over in Port.. saying dont be dumb, learn English, felt safe for the most part, nice subway, but always went in after dark.(once I snuck out to use an internet cafe around the corner at 10PM and saw a security guard walking around with a drawn gun, and this is in the safe area.
