Abercrombie & Fitch Offers Jersey Shore's The Situation Cash To Wear Someone Else's Clothes

Abercrombie Fitch Situation

First Posted: 08/17/11 09:59 AM ET Updated: 10/17/11 06:12 AM ET

NEW ALBANY, Ohio - A clothing company is offering money to Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino and his fellow "Jersey Shore" cast members — so they'll stop wearing the brand on the show.

Abercrombie & Fitch Co. says in a news release posted Tuesday that it's concerned that having Sorrentino seen in its clothing could cause "significant damage" to the company's image.

Abercrombie says a connection to The Situation goes against the "aspirational nature" of its brand and may be "distressing" to customers. The Ohio-based retailer says it has offered a "substantial payment" to Sorrentino and producers of the MTV show so he'll wear something else.

The company says it also is making the offer to others in the hard-partying cast.

An MTV spokeswoman did not immediately return messages for comment on Wednesday.

I wander if their clothes are made in sweat shops by ten year olds.

This sounds like when Vodka companies would complain about rappers drinking their product. A&F you exclusionary, prep school, glorified Old Navy, get over yourself. The situation might be a loser, but show a little class. A&F is doing this for publicity - makes them as low as "The Situation."

I'm no fan of programs like Jersey Shore, but I've heard some bad things about Abercrombie and Fitch also.

I wish someone would pay me not to wear their clothes, seems like it'd be an easy job. Although then again I don't have a six pack, I actually have at least one talented bone in my body...and I'm not orange. Looking at it that way I guess I don't qualify for the job...

I read this story and I smile because I stopped watching all t.v. a few years ago and I haven`t the faintest idea who they are writting about and it makes me so happy ! He sure sounds like a real winner !

They should have an award for people that sit in front of computers touting how happy they are for not watching TV. Different media, same disease.

I mean seriously, this is the huffingtonpost. Whats the difference between commenting on Jersey Shore cast members and vegging in front of a TV?

Is this the company that routinely gets in trouble for their ads being too sexual and that feature children?
10:06 AM on 08/17/2011
What? As long as they don't have their brand logo displayed on the show, then they don't really have any say and this just sounds like a publicity stunt. IF their clothes are on the show with the brands displayed then that means the show has permission (or received money) to allow those brands to be displayed. Otherwise it would be blurred out like you see in other reality shows once in a while.

That doesn't follow.

1. A&F didn't indicate that they had any say in the matter. They offered money so that their clothes wouldn't be worn.
2. The fact that MTV does or doesn't blur A&F identifiable markings/logo, etc. isn't proof of them having permission or not. Blurring logos has way more to do with revenue streams and handling objections from (other) promotional partners who *are* paying for product placement than it does with reproduction rights (which don't necessarily require permission -- fair use and all; after all it *is* clothing). Just because MTV doesn't blur doesn't mean they are being paid, nor does it mean they needed clearance.
