OTTAWA - A Canadian-born man was killed in Libya this week as he fought to free his ancestral home from the regime of Moammar Gadhafi.

A friend says Nader Benrewin was shot by a sniper as he stormed Gadhafi's compound on Tuesday. He was 24.

Haitham Alabadleh says Benrewin was born in Edmonton but had family living in Tripoli, the Libyan capital.

He says Benrewin had lived and worked in Ottawa for three years before deciding to return to Libya to offer support to rebel forces.

Alabadleh remembers his friend as a peace activist who loved to attend seminars and enjoyed meals and riverside strolls with his friends.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is aware of reports that a Canadian was killed in Libya but declined to offer any confirmation.

That's a terrible thing to say, especially since you know nothing about the man and why he was there. Why don't you lift your veil of cruel ignorance and read about him?

He willingly chose to take up arms against fellow human beings.

He paid the price for his choice.

What a waste.

War is never the answer.
