TORONTO - He's a lifelong Conservative supporter, but Troy Oakley was so moved by Jack Layton's farewell words to Canadians he now has them tattooed on his arm.

"It's not about party lines with Mr. Layton, it's about being good to everybody else and just doing the right thing," says Oakley, 39, a college registrar from Mississauga, west of Toronto.

Of the 27 tattoos adorning his body, Oakley says this one is his favourite.

Running across the top of his forearm, the words stretch about 16 inches from his wrist to his elbow and were inked on his arm in a tattoo shop in Oshawa on Thursday night.

"My friends, love is better than anger," reads the text lifted from a letter left by the New Democratic Party leader before his death Monday of cancer.

"Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world."

Oakley says the message touched him because it is simple and brimming with common sense.

"People can look at things in a negative manner, or they can look at things in a positive manner," says Oakley.

"I mean, the guy is lying on his bed dying and all he's thinking about is everybody else. I think that speaks volumes to why I was honoured to put these words on my skin."

Oakley hopes his tattoo will remind others about Layton's optimism. The numerous posts a photo he posted on Facebook and Twitter has generated tell him it's working.

"A lot of people have seen this tattoo, so it's already made a difference because now they're going to remember those words."

I just hope that this guy and many many others remember those words and not vote for Fear Party in power.

Jack reminded us of a gentler, more intelligent, more progressive time when party was purposed to serve country and problems were solved in the interests of all Canadians. Jack respected the spirit of our longstanding peace directed foreign policy, our determination to grow our economy while respecting the balance of nature, that our health should not be flushed down the drain of corporate interest, that science was our friend. We'll miss him less if he continues to live inside us.

These words used to be a common thread that went through most people and political parties in Canada. The three main parties were clustered more closely around a common Canadian ideal.
Maybe it was because we were still doing a lot of building the country. Lately it seems we are further apart in ideas and ideals and stalled as far as moving ahead and building. We used to think and work so much for the future. Now it seems we can't get past arguing about today.
Tomorrow looks pretty grim to me. We just try to grab up the most of what is now for ourselves. Burn it up and do nothing for the future.

Even up to the late 80's as a country and as a planet we were at least responding to science. Dealing with the ozone hole over Antarctica was opposed by industry but gov'ts felt a responsibility and without much hesitation banned CFC's in refrigerators and such.

Since the Boomers have taken over, and the Manufacturing Consent companies have taken root, so we have been taken over by the endless me me me attitude and a lack of clear decisions because it is important to become mindless corporations. I hope when they are gone, they'll take their attitudes with them. Hopefully not dragging the rest of us with them.

This is quite ironic. They had a real chance to change the world, but they decided to go for partner instead. Interestingly their children as a generation have a stronger sense of volunteerism. It will be interesting if they start to try to correct the wrongs their parents supported?

What a terribly done tattoo. Looks like they spelled "than" as "then" the first time around, then went back to correct it.

If I were to get a famous phrase tattooed on my body, I'd want to be certain it was spelled correctly...

lol you're totally right, the tattoo artist made the same mistake 3 times! Good thing he corrected it before taking a pic and showing the whole world.

They also forgot the word "and" in the sentence "so let us be loving, hopeful, and optimistic".
