Stanley Cup Takes A Tumble During Newfoundland Visit With Michael Ryder (VIDEO)

Stanley Cup

The Huffington Post Canada   First Posted: 08/30/11 11:48 AM ET Updated: 10/30/11 06:12 AM ET

Former Boston Bruins' Michael Ryder brought the Stanley Cup home to Bonavista, Newfoundland on Tuesday to excited crowds of hockey fans, locals and dignitaries.

But Ryder, who has since been traded to the Dallas Stars, had a bumpty time with the Cup. During a welcoming reception in St. John's, the Stanley Cup, one of the oldest sporting trophies in the world, took a tumble when the table it rested on collapsed.

The incident was caught on video and the Cup didn't look like it suffered any major damage. One cheeky person even quipped that it was the Cup's "first dent of the day." Oh you wacky Newfoundlanders.

The Cup, which traditionally travels to the hometowns of players from the championship team, has a long history of misadventures. Over the decades it has been lost, used in baptisms and used as both a dog bowl and a celebratory champagne cup. See Bleacher Report's slideshow for more examples of Stanley Cup shenanigans.

Ryder isn't the first Newfoundlander to bring the Cup to the province. The Red Wings' Danny Cleary brought the Cup home when he helped win it in 2008.

Correction: The piece originally referred to a welcoming reception in Bonavista, the actual Stanley Cup dropping incident occurred in St. John's. The piece has been corrected.
Correction: Michael Ryder was traded to the Dallas Stars in the off-season. That fact has been added to the story.

Huff got it WRONG. Look at the video. Table leg gave way. Ryder did NOT drop the cup.

Come on Huff - correct the misleading headline

HUFF should certainly apologize to Ryder, and change the headline. HE DID NOT DROP THE CUP.

Huffington Post got it WRONG, WRONG WRONG!

Ryder did NOT drop the Stanley Cup. Watch the video. He placed it on the table, let go and turned away. The table leg gave way, something Ryder could not have known would happen.

Come on Huff - get the story right. Change the headline to reflect the FACTS!

in the early 90s' Jagr through it from the top of a hotel, and into the pool. It was pretty dented ;-)

Pretty sure that was Phil Bourque throwing it off Lemiuex's deck and into the pool.

Stephane Matteau broke the bowl off and had it soldered back on before it got to the next Ranger (GM Neil Smith).

What a difference 20 years makes.

In 1991, ya gotta love the mullet.

And in 2011, Borque recalls,

Mr. Ryder DID NOT drop the cup. The table collapsed because the legs at one end were not locked down properly - as the article states. Get the headline accurate to the story, HuffPost. Don't your editors read your own stories?

It's not exactly a serious story anyways.
