Support staff at McGill University walked off the job early Thursday morning, launching a general strike on the first day of class for many students.

The school and support staff are at odds over salaries and social benefits.

Moving ahead with a strike means students will be affected, but staff say have no choice, said Patrick Leblanc, a spokesman for the Public Service Alliance of Canada.

Striking staff members were on the picket line at 7 a.m. Thursday.

Several services will be disrupted, including on-campus residences and class laboratories.

This walk out is long overdue. Blum & co. are making outrageous salaries while the people doing real work are paid peanuts,

And not even indexed peanuts!
