Top 10 Detoxifying Foods

The Huffington Post Canada     First Posted: 08/30/2011 11:55 am EDT   Updated: 01/02/2013 9:40 am EST

While I'm a firm believer that detoxification is an essential part of optimal health, I acknowledge there is a lot of misinformation on how to detox safely and effectively. I'm often asked, "What is the best detox/detox kit?" My answer is simple: We're all biochemically unique and thus, have different biochemical demands. There are a number of organs which aid in the removal of the dangerous exogenous and endogenous toxins from our body.

Therefore, it's highly recommended to seek the guidance of a qualified health-care provider before you begin a detox regimen.

That being said, there are a number of foods you can eat safely on a regular basis to get a gentle detox daily. Below are my favourites:

You can't beat beets! Beets are full of vitamins B3, B6, C and beta-carotene. They're also a valuable source of iron, magnesium, zinc and calcium -- all necessary to promote optimal detoxification and elimination. Beets also support good gallbladder and liver health -- organs that are paramount for breaking down and removing toxins. The high amount of fibre in beetroot improves digestion and helps eliminate bodily waste.

The high amount of fibre in beetroot improves digestion and helps eliminate bodily waste.

Sea Vegetables

Often known as seaweeds, these amazing foods house powerful antioxidants that help to alkalize the blood and strengthen the digestive tract. The algin in seaweeds absorb toxins from the digestive tract in much the same way a water softener removes the hardness from tap water. Sea vegetables offer the broadest range of minerals of any food, containing virtually all the minerals found in the ocean -- the same minerals that are found in human blood. Dulse is my personal fave.

Dandelions
Dandelions are considered a powerhouse food full of nutrients that are essential for anyone regularly eating the "Standard American Diet" (SAD). They're a rich source of minerals and provide a variety of phytonutrients. They're super antioxidants that support cleansing of the digestive tract and offer great liver support. Try adding dandelion leaves to your salad.

Broccoli Sprouts
Broccoli is part of the powerhouse brassica family of vegetables. Broccoli contains important phytochemicals that are released when they're chopped, chewed, fermented, cooked or digested. The substances are released then break down into sulphorophanes, indole-3-carbinol and D-glucarate, which all have a specific effect on detoxification. Broccoli sprouts can actually provide more benefit than regular broccoli as they contain 20 times more sulfurophane. Add these to your salads and get creative with them in your meals.

Flaxseed
One of my favourite "superfoods," flaxseeds serve many purposes. When detoxifying your body, it's essential to ensure toxins are eliminated properly. Ground flaxseeds provide a wonderful source of fibre that helps to bind and flush toxins from the intestinal tract. They're also a great source of health promoting omega 3 oils. Try consuming two tablespoons of ground flaxseeds in lemon water every morning.

Lemons
Who doesn't love lemon? This wonderful fruit stimulates the release of enzymes and helps convert toxins into a water-soluble form that can be easily excreted from the body. Drinking lemon water, which is alkaline-forming, first thing in the morning will help to balance out the acidity of foods we've consumed. Don't forget to add your ground flaxseeds to enhance toxin removal.

Garlic
No detox plan should be without some garlic: It's a powerful antiviral, antiseptic and antibiotic. Ridding your body of these pathogenic microbes can reduce endogenous (made by your body) toxins. The vital sulphuric compounds garlic contains makes it an essential detoxifier.

Artichoke
Artichokes are not only a very tasty food, they're also incredibly healthy. Artichokes have been shown to increase bile production and purify/protect the liver. They also have a mild diuretic effect on the kidneys, ensuring proper removal of toxins once the liver breaks them down.

Tumeric
Curcumin is the active ingredient in the spice turmeric, which gives it its yellow color. The rate at which your detox pathways function depends on your genes, your age, lifestyle and a good supply of nutrients involved in the detox process. Curcumin is used a lot in Ayurvedic Medicine to treat liver and digestive disorders.

Apples
Apples are full of wonderful nutrients. You get fibre, vitamins, minerals and many beneficial phytochemicals such as D-Glucarate, flavonoids and terpenoids. All of these substances are used in the detox process. One flavonoid, Phlorizidin (phlorizin), is thought to help stimulate bile production which helps with detox as the liver gets rid of some toxins through the bile. Apples are also a good source of the soluble fibre pectin, which can help detox metals and food additives from your body. It's best to eat only organic apples as the non-organic varieties are among the top 12 foods that've been found to contain the most pesticide residues.

Well I believe that God made fruits and vegetables with a purpose and that is to keep us fit and healthy. An affordable and safe solution to lose weight is by eating these natural resources that Mother Nature has. Aside from fruits, porridge can also help you to lose weight. It's sad that so many people are ignorant about their own bodily functions and what certain foods can do for us. But perhaps shills from Pfizer, etc. are paid to say these things; who knows? In any case, we need to consume mainly raw fruits and veggies, seeds and nuts. An alkaline versus acidic diet, in other words. Meat produces toxic by-products like uric acid.

I know all my meat comes from Pfizer! It's the only meat producer I trust. I remember as a kid growing up next to that Pfizer farm and seeing those cows marked with Pfizer brands and thinking man those will make a great steak some day.

The best thing is to get a single auger juicer (you can get good ones for about $300 USD) and juice apple, dandelion, beet and lemon and that is quite a cleanser!

I usually just make veggie smoothies in my blender/
Beet and apple is a staple; as is spinach and apple with lemon juic

That is so horrible, burning all those fossil fuels to make yourself a smoothie. You should be hand crushing all your fruits and veggies in a biodegradable mortar and pestle. Poser.

Do you have a Vitamix? I haven't used my new VM for juices yet. I like the fact that my juicer is slow-moving so it doesn't oxidize the juice. High-speed blenders might do that.

Thanks for your post! I juice a green drink almost daily. Organic spinach, broccoli leaves and stems, cauliflower leaves, beets, beet greens, carrots, carrot greens/tops, swiss chard, collard greens, kale, grape leaves and sometime blackberry leaves, ginger and a apple. I am a vegan and have eaten 100% RAW for 6 months.. I agree with you we need to eat more RAW fruits and veggies. People need to learn nutrition!

Thing is, I'm wary of internet article that promise that something "absorbs toxins" or "eliminates toxins." Because "toxins" has become one of those "glittering generality" word with no precise medical definition that new-age, homeopathic, and unregulated supplement marketers LOVE to use. Everything "absorbs toxins" and "balances your acidity." What? Next we'll be told that ellagic acid "balances your vibrations" or something.

Oh gawd. Toxins exist and yes, certain foods remove them quite quickly. It's so elementary. Do you ever eat pieces of watermelon and feel kind of funky? I can feel what a cleanser it is; probably due to so much water. Dandelion cleanses the liver, as do all bitters. Go eat your dead flesh and pop your Prozac. I can't work with this!
02:51 AM on 09/04/2011
Makes sense, eat some weeds and bam, your liver is clean! It's amazing that hospitals don't use this advanced technology to cure all liver ailments. You should be a doctor, guys come in with failing livers and you hook em up with a dandelion IV. Hows Dr. Winter Skye sound? Wait till Harvard medical reads your report on all the medicine you "feel" working.
01:49 AM on 09/04/2011
Look at fish they contain mercury and they tell us not to eat much fish for that fact. If the body gets rid of it naturally due to our livers than the fish wouldnt have it and there wouldnt be a concern for us to eat it. Common sense people. We just need to start to think for ourselves.

"Detox" is a non-scientific scam.

"Dr" Dempster is not a real doctor.

What a disappointment that the Huffington Post would publish this rubbish.

I have used several detoxifying methods in my life and every time they have made me feel tons better. Detox is a scam?? Really? So, all those chemicals / herbicides, pollutions, hairsprays, all those chemicals in products we use EVERYDAY are not in our bodies?? YES, they are and detoxing / getting rid of them is a good thing to do. WAKE UP
03:05 PM on 09/03/2011
So eating a LEMON is going to make HAIRSPRAY leave your body? WAKE UP

No the idea of a detox is misleading and can be potentially dangerous. If you were eating a healthy all natural diet in the first place you wouldn't need to be cleansing, because your body does it naturally.

People who detox regularly, think they can overindulge with no consequence because this magic cleansing system will fix all their problems. Then you have the health nuts that have been brainwashed into thinking that cleansing is the only way to rid your body of toxins. It's a myth and can do more harm then good.

Muscle Breakdown
Brain Damage
Gallstones
Hair Loss
Anemia
Weakened Immune System

These are a few of the potential side affects of detoxing (including the master cleanse), but what do you expect when you are withholding vital nutrients from your body for an extended period of time? Just eat right and exercise, your body will do the rest.

Flax seed has ONE of the omega-3s, alphalinolenic acid (ALA).

For those seeking healthy amounts of omega-3s, keep in mind that your body may do better with direct sources of the other two omega-3s.

Other O-3 fatty acids include docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) which are best obtained from fish or perhaps some algae products.
09:37 AM on 09/03/2011
Firm believer in the benefits of flax seed. It's important to start with small doses and work your way up!
03:13 PM on 09/03/2011
Flax seed is a great source of ALA and Omega-6 fatty acids can be found in leafy vegetables, seeds, nuts, grains and vegetable oils. So, if you are eating a healthy balanced diet you have nothing to worry about.

You should not believe that it matters whether foods are acidic or alkaline, because no foods change the acidity of anything in your body except your urine. Your stomach is so acidic that no food can change its acidity. Citrus fruits, vinegar, and vitamins such as ascorbic acid or folic acid do not change the acidity of your stomach or your bloodstream. An entire bottle of calcium pills or antacids would not change the acidity of your stomach for more than a few minutes.

All foods that leave your stomach are acidic. Then they enter your intestines where secretions from your pancreas neutralize the stomach acids. So no matter what you eat, the food in stomach is acidic and the food in the intestines is alkaline.

Dietary modification cannot change the acidity of any part of your body except your urine. Your bloodstream and organs control acidity in a very narrow range. Anything that changed acidity in your body would make you very sick and could even kill you. Promoters of these products claim that cancer cells cannot live in an alkaline environment and that is true, but neither can any of the other cells in your body.

"Toxins" sounds bad. Too bad the word is not defined in the article. Is cyanide a toxin?

The word is used in a mystical sense in these articles. "Toxin" is often a code for "feces," as well as "unclean spirits" or "demonic infestation." If the writer is claiming that eating beets will remove dioxin or DDT from storage in your fat cells, for instance, that's a somewhat dubious proposition.
03:15 PM on 09/03/2011
EVERYDAY you ingest "TOXINS" common sense should tell you that you need to get rid of them( pesticides, herbacides, chemicals from products, pollution, heavy metals, etc the list goes on and on) I hope you now understand.
