Former premier Gordon Campbell is among 14 people soon to be awarded the honour of the Order of British Columbia.

The office of B.C. Lieutenant-Governor Steven Point announced the 2011 recipients Friday, noting that Campbell would be receiving the award due to his standing as a “visionary, leader [and] proud British Columbian.”

Campbell left office earlier this year amid controversy over his government's handling of the harmonized sales tax.

Also being honoured are Child Find B.C. president Crystal Dunahee, whose son vanished in 1991, and sports announcer and analyst Jim Robson, who was described as, “the voice of hockey in B.C.”

Other recipients this year include:

- Luigi Aquilini ,of Vancouver, owner of the Vancouver Canucks.

- Peter Norman Baird, of Vancouver, public servant.

- Ken Dobell, of Vancouver, public servant.

- David Emerson, of Vancouver, businessman and former federal cabinet minister.

- Yuri Fulmer, of West Vancouver, entrepreneur and volunteer.

- Tim Jones, of North Vancouver, search and rescue leader.

- Dr. Phil Muir of Hazelton, long-time northern doctor and innovator.

- J.C. O'Rourke, of West Vancouver, businessman.

- Karen O'Shannacery, of Vancouver, advocate for homeless people.

- Baljit Sethi, of Prince George, advocate for immigrants.

The investiture ceremony will be held at Government House in Victoria on Oct. 4.

Since the Order was first introduced in 1989, 301 people have received the honour.

Sounds like the Order of BC has just been relegated to a Hallmark card. Too bad for the deserving people.

Boy, that's a terse littlte piece from the CBC huh? Not ONE WORD of teh controversy and mounting opposition to this, nor the 3,249 member Facebook page which was started only yesterday and is rapidly growing. There's also the interestingly-missing point, part of the controversy, as to how a sitting elected official was nominated at ALL and why he wasn't disqualified (nomination deadline was the 10th, he stepped down as MLA on the 15th)...and the refrain "cronyism" is being heard very loudly, also because of Emerson and Dobell being on the list......

This is a hot-button issue in BC; yet all the HP can do is post a way-too-brief CBC item, with no further comment or research? Get your act together HP!

Since you're too lazy to look:

http://www.timescolonist.com/news/Editorial+Order+panel+stumbles/5354786/story.html#ixzz1X7ou8fgn

The Nanaimo Daily News also has an item, as doubtless will other smaller BC papers as the week unfolds. Watch for demonstrations at the ceremony on October 4....

As one commentor has noted, giving him (and Dobell and Emerson) this award devalues its meaning to other recipients, and the esteem of the award itself. Other much more deserving politicians remain outside the order......yet the most despised man in BC history is given it, with his nominators calling him a "visionary"?????

there is now a petition to stop this. I believe it's the first time that has happened. Mr Campbell is a black mark on BC politics (and that takes some doing) and is about as undeserving a recipient that I can think of. It degrades that award to all those who have deserved it and have been awarded it in the past. If Campbell had any class he would decline it.

Campbell does not have class, anything but. He does have "crass" though. Lots of it. As do his cronies and followers.....

We the undersigned citizens of British Columbia demand that Gordon Campbell not be awarded the Order of British Columbia. On Gordon Campbell’s watch poverty rates in BC soared to become the highest in Canada, homelessness increased massively, children’s health, safety and education were neglected or made worse, legal contracts were broken, our rivers and parks were destroyed by ill-conceived hydro projects and BC Ferries, BC Hydro and other public services have been destroyed. There is no justification for giving Gordon Campbell an award for his tenure as Premier of BC.

Ok Huffpost Canada--better job please. The decision to award Gordon Campbell the Order of BC is quite controversial here in BC. Your article is totally bland and not representational of what BC papers are reporting. If you're going to cover Canadian news--this is actually a story not a tidbit.

Question for the committee that made this decision--what outstanding achievement or excellence or distinction in his field is being acknowledged--was it bringing it a new tax without mentioning it to voters in the election immediately preceding this legislative action? My point--> Gordon Campbell may be no worse nor better than any Premier BC has had, but come on the Order of BC? A committee has decided that the best of the best of our province's distinguished citizens are former bureaucrats and the former premier that basically had to resign from the heat of the HST decision.

The HP has gone and COOKED UP controversies (like the Karygiannis item recently), often rather pathetically, while concealing major controversies like this one as if they weren not going on. Either it's a lack of imagination/perspective/education in its Toronto offices, or they're part of the whitewash-game like all the rest of the Canadian media.

That the CBC item didn't have anything more on this than the piffle above calls into question the relevance of its reportage and analysis. Very disappointing that the CBC would post anything about this without digging into the controversy...but we know who signs their paycheques and appoints their bosses; the same guy who appointed Campbell to Canadian High Commissioner (instead of charging him with fraud and influence peddling).

It is a sad time for the people and Province of British Columbia!

Some years ago, the people of British Columbia chose to be compassionate and forgave Premier Gordon Campbell after he was arrested in Hawaii for drunk driving. He went on to win several more elections after that.

There were many suspious deals made in Victoria during the Campbell era and these deals still remain in the dard. Our proud BC Rail was sold but not to the highest bidder. Two provincial employees who worked out of the Premier's office eventually admitted guilt and their legal bills were promptly paid for by the Campbell government compliments of the citizens of BC.

For all that was not right about Mr. Campbell's time in office, he has become Canada's new Ambassador to the UK (appointed by his old time HST buddy, Stephen Harper). If that wasn't bad enough, our unelected premier recently nominated Mr. Campbell to the Order of British Columbia....... the same unelected Liberal Premier who promised to be neutral during the HST debate but went on to spend millions of taxpayer dollars trying to convince us that the HST is good.

BC needs a good premier...someone who is truly humbled when offering themselves for Public Service as Premier of British Columbia. Mr. Campbell sits in London as Canada's Ambassador while his Order of British Columbia awaits him in Victoria. I'm not sure I want to vote anymore!

Don't stop voting, just vet your politicians.
Campbell should never have beed e-elected after his first term, if the public had been paying attention.
