9/11 Anniversary: Obama Thanks Harper For Canada's Help

Obama

U.S. President Barack Obama delivered a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Thursday to thank Canada for its help on 9/11. The letter has been distributed to the public.

In the letter Obama thanked Canada for hosting thousands of stranded Americans and the "solidarity you continue to show in our shared fight against terrorism."

The full text of letter, courtesy of The Canadian Press, can be found below, as well as an image of the document.

Dear Mr. Prime Minister:

It has often been said that the United States and Canada are great neighbors, trading partners and the best of friends. Friendship gives us comfort and it gives us strength, but can be tested in difficult times. In one of the darkest moments in our history, Canada stood by our side and showed itself to be a true friend.

On the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we remember with gratitude and affection how the people of Canada offered us the comfort of friendship and extraordinary assistance that day and in the following days by opening their airports, homes and hearts to us. As airspace over our two countries was shut down, hundreds of flights en route to the United States were landed safely by Canadian air traffic control in seventeen Canadian airports from coast to coast. The small city of Gander, Newfoundland, population 9,600, received 6,600 diverted passengers, while Vancouver received 8,500 people. For the next 3 days — before our air space was reopened — those displaced passengers were treated like family in Canadian homes, receiving food, shelter, medical attention and comfort.

Ten years later, we continue to be grateful for Canada's friendship, and for the solidarity you continue to show us in our shared fight against terrorism. The United States is fortunate to share a border with a country that understands, in your words, "There is no such thing as a threat to the national security of the United States which does not represent a direct threat to this country."

On this anniversary, we recognize all the gestures of friendship and solidarity shown to us by Canada and its people, and give thanks for our continuing special relationship.

Sincerely

Signed Barack Obama

As an American citizen I, for one, am appalled and embarassed by the posts here describing our discourtesy and indifference (including formerly, my own) to our American neighbors to the north. Please accept my apology as (at least) representative also of many of my countrymen. You are our brothers, culturally and historically. Those of us reasonably evolved, love you. The remainder don't matter.

I know POTUS is gonna be busy tomorrow, so not on that terrible anniversary, but sometime soon, a surprise visit to the people of Gander would show tangible thanks, person-to-person, not just a nice thank-you letter to the PMO. Those Americans who were sheltered that week have returned and returned, and bonds were forged that will never be forgotten between Newfoundlanders and those they sheltered, similarly in Nova Scotia. Hospitality in time-of-need and rescuing those in trouble is something of a Newfoundland tradition, part of its history, and in this case as with past examples like the Titanic or the efforts made by St John's to welcome the naval and merchant marine fleets during the wars, Newfoundlanders eagerly and generously stepped into the breach and opened their hearts and homes and services to the stranded. Vancouver sees dignitaries all the time, and absorbing 8,000 people isn't all that hard when there's that many hotel cancellations in any given week (especialy THAT week).....but tiny little Gander, what they did was heroic in scale, and just from the sheer goodness of their hearts....if White House staff are reading this, I'd say it would be far more than merely symbolic for Mr. Obama to show up in Gander and meet all those fine people and thank them in person. Not sure if a US President has ever set foot in Newfoundland, but this would sure be a good reason to go.

A further thought on that: if the Obama household can handle another dog, a Newfoundland puppy from Newfoundland itself would be a living symbol, especially if given by the people or the city of Gander. The breed epitomizes the Newfoundland spirit - loyal, brave, selfless, strong, hardy, hard-working...and downright sweet in temperament and naturally happy as all get-out.

Of "Top Ten Islands in the World It Would be Best to be Marooned On", Newfoundland's gotta be in the list, probably in the top three. just for those reasons.

Would be kinda cool if the Prez and First Lady got "screeched in" and had to kiss the cod, too....

this is one of those times when i would have preferred to be ignored by a nation that has such horrendous morals...we did what we had to do and i for one don't want their thanks..what i would like is for americans to look at us for what we are, one of the few friends you have and to start acting accordingly.

Please do not generalize especially on this day. The president was gracious in thanking us so we should in turn be gracious in accepting it. That's what adults do. It's been my experience that a large majority of Americans (with a capitol A by the way) are proud and honored to have us as neighbors.

The letter is welcomed gesture, but it would have been better if Mr. Obama made a speech
from the Oval office, telling Americans of the openness and generosity of the People of
Canada. The fact that Canadians and other Nationalities were also victims of 9/11 has
seemed to have disappeared from the Framework of Rememberancein the U.S.
Mr. Bush and his handlers thanked everyone except Canada. Why , becomes the question ???
If Mr. Obama had thanked Canada from the Oval office, the American people would
possibly have a better view of their Nothern neighbour, and this would have made amends
for being forgotten in Mr. Bushs' speech as well as many other slights that have happened
over the decades.
Let us pray that these kind of Tragedies will never happen again to any Nation.
Mr. Obama , Thank you for the Letter.

Too bad Dubya couldn't have said thanks to Canada. But Obama has the class Dubya never had despite his being Richie Rich.

Thank you for this long over due thank you. It is not often you feel a personal affront as a nation but Bush managed to do it twice in 8 years.

The first time was the traditional visit after being elected President to come to Canada. Bush went to Mexico.

The second was the 9/11 speech how many Canadians opened up their homes and hearts to those stranded. Bush said nothing, and the insult continued with the chatter that they must of come in from Canada. Which was also false and the rumor still circulates much to our chagrin.

We don't ask much of our neighbors to the south but with all due respect they should thank their lucky stars they live next to a nation such as ours.

Thank you Mr President.

One should always give gifts and offer aid without the expectation of being thanked or recognized. I know the people that were stranded here will always remember our hospitality, and that's always been good enough for me. It's something that Canadians did that I've been proud of. I don't need a President to tell me our country and our people are great.

It's nice of President Obama to say something, but it wouldn't have bothered me if he hadn't. Helping at a time like that is our duty as people, not just Canadians.

We can hold our own as Canadians it is our nature to be kind to those in need.
I do think it was a nice gesture on his part something that Mr Bush never ever thought of being grateful to our nation.

I remember listening to Bush's thankyous and was quite outraged at the omission of Canada. At the time, I seriously wondered if there would be a volley of accusations leading to some severe and discomforting changes in how the US related to Canada, even invasion by US troops, perhaps.

Well, the US didn't need to send troops to make life uncomfortable for Canadians. It's tough sleeping beside an elephant.

If Americans are foolish enough not to see the brilliant man in their white house than they could lose him. I dream of a day that Canada would once again have an inspirational leader the likes of President Obama. Your welcome President Obama and thanks for remembering us. We pray all on your soil and ours stay safe and find peaceful times.

Agreed, They have made it impossible for him to be successful. Every idea he has proposed has been cut until there in nothing left of it, and then they yell "See he can't do anything to help us!" They don't deserve to be saved if you ask me.

hey, the current president may have done bush's job but it is still 10 years later and every politician in the U S since then has either mostly ignored us or villified us. How about an apology for 8 years of American politicians intentionally lying about where the 9/11 terrorists came from? Sorry, I personally think Obama is not a bad or ungracious man but his country is and their attitude generally sucks

Mr. President,

I would like to say thank you, Mr. President for remembering us.   All too often, in the past, we as citizens of Canada, your neighbours, have felt slighted by the American government - kind of taken for granted, if you know what I mean. We have always been there to lend a helping hand to our American friends, and  it is greatly appreciated that you would think of our contribution to your country in its time of need.    But then, I am not surprised that you would send your thanks because you are a class guy, and Americans should be very proud to have you as their President.   BTW,  if they do not want you, we will welcome you with open arms!

Regards

You're welcome Mr. President. Now tell those crooks at TransCanada Pipeline, it's in the best interests of Americans and Canadians if the 100-200 years worth of Alberta oils sands oil you want is refined close to the source in Alberta and Montana. It seems silly to send it via pipeline to Texas where it will be refined and exported overseas-- kind of defeats the purpose if it's not refined in North America for North American consumption.
