Backes is Blues' next captain

David Backes was named the new captain of the St. Louis Blues on Friday.

Backes marked 31 goals for the second time in three seasons in 2010-11, with a career-high 62 assists and plus-32 rating while playing all 82 games.

The right wing has missed just three games in the past three seasons, and has totalled 102 goals and 116 assists in 364 games since being selected in the second round of the 2003 NHL entry draft.

Backes, 27, won a silver medal with the United States team at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and has suited up three times for his country at the world championships.

Backes succeeds defenceman Eric Brewer, who was dealt to Tampa Bay late last season.

The club named as assistant captains newly acquired Jamie Langenbrunner, as well as returning veterans Barret Jackman, Andy McDonald and Alex Steen.
