WINNIPEG - Manitoba Tories are promising cash for programs that help children at risk.

Tory Leader Hugh McFadyen (mick-FAH-din) says he would set up a fund to give $5 million a year for groups like the Winnipeg Boys and Girls Club, a non-profit group that offers kids organized sports and other activities.

McFadyen says the money would cover the cost of providing new programming and the cost of running background checks on volunteers.

McFadyen has been focusing on crime in the first week of the campaign for the Oct. 4 provincial election.

He says helping at-risk youth will address some of the root causes of crime.
