Traffic snarls after new lane closure on Hwy 20

Transport Quebec has closed one out of two lanes on Highway 20 heading east towards downtown Montreal for repairs until December.

Traffic was backed up for several kilometres during Monday morning's rush hour, as it was the first weekday with the lane closed.

The closure starts after the Decarie and Champlain bridge exits and extends until the Ville-Marie. The lanes are part of the Turcot interchange, which has been receiving urgent repairs after officials found cracks on a ramp earlier this year.

To ease some of the headaches for drivers, the Transport Ministry has re-opened an additional lane on the Mercier Bridge, and hopes this will encourage drivers to take the Mercier instead of using the Turcot interchange to access the Champlain Bridge.
