Financial Post:

Jim Flaherty, Canada's finance minister, has submitted a letter to several U.S. publications to object to efforts by U.S. authorities to obtain tax information about Americans through Canadian banks. The proposed U.S. legislation "has far-reaching extraterritorial implications. It would turn Canadian banks into extensions of the IRS and would raise significant privacy concerns for Canadians," Mr. Flaherty said.

I just spent $5900.00 to address this situation only to find out that while I did file previously I made a mistake and the USA owes me $800.00 in refunds..............What a deal, pay $5900.00 to get $800.00 back.

I would love to renounce my US citizenshp as I am a Canadian citizen as well, but it is extremely costly to do so.

Wait till a million plus Canadian Americans start divesting themselves of Canadian holdings. The banks and financial institutions will love that. I will be doing that this fall based on consultation with our US tax attorney and Canadian CGA.

We Americans are merely indentured servants until death. Americans free......What a JOKE!

Yeah, I'm caught up in this mess. The USA is dirt poor and they are trying to extort cash from Canadians. No taxes are owed. READ:Tax rates in Canada (Ontario) are 41% after 85k.

They are trying to impose fines in the neighborhood of 250,000.00 for simply not filing.

I'll tell you who is going to have a bigger problem than me. My Tax Accountant. He/She WILL BE SUED. I expect that my professional tax accountant that knows that I am an American, when asked to "look after my tax requirements" should have told me that I have to file a US return. He/She did not even know this.

The IRS was never interested in these returns. 2 very complicated documents (Tax return plus FBAR). The IRS would have had to process north of 10 million documents per year with a net revenue of $00.00. They simply did not care.

Skip ahead to 2011 when the USA is dirt poor, now they are going after fines and penalties (no interest and no tax due).

Drove us out in 2005................Best move we made in 30 years of marriage. Just wish I could shake my US citizenship, but they make it very costly to do so.
