Tiqa, a three-year-old beluga whale living in the Vancouver Aquarium, died early on Friday morning.

The whale was born on June 10, 2008 to Qila, another one of the aquarium's belugas. According to the CBC is the third young whale to die at the zoo in the last three years. A beluga in the wild can live more than 50 years.

"Tiqa has been transferred to the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Health Care Centre where a full necropsy is being performed by Aquarium veterinarian Dr. Martin Haulena and Ministry of Agriculture veterinary pathologist Dr. Stephen Raverty," the aquarium said in a statement.

The whale got its name in a popular public naming contest.
