Ontario Election: McGuinty 'Very Concerned' About Cuts Under Possible Tory Trifecta

OTTAWA - A Tory trifecta would be disastrous for health care and other public services in Ontario, Premier Dalton McGuinty said Tuesday, as he ramped up his attacks against his main rival.

The Liberal leader had said in the past he wasn't offended that Prime Minister Stephen Harper called for a Tory hat trick during a summer BBQ at the home of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, but he now says he's worried about the repercussions of having Conservatives at all three levels of government.

"I'm very concerned, there is a lot at stake in this election and Ontarians need to understand this," McGuinty said while visiting the Montford Hospital in Ottawa, a Francophone hospital the Liberals point out the Progressive Conservatives tried to close in 1997.

"They're not the PCs of Bill Davis, the guys that built up the college system ... those guys are gone. These guys will attack our public services."

McGuinty, who has suggested during the election campaign that the Tories have elements of the American-style Tea Party under current leader Tim Hudak, also brought up a favourite bogeyman — former Tory premier Mike Harris.

"Remember what the PC government did," McGuinty said. "I've observed them at close hand for 21 years, I've seen the whites of their eyes ... I follow these guys, I know what they do."

"It's the same guys, they want to do the same thing again. Our responsibility together — not to allow that to happen."

Hudak dismissed the criticism as a sign that the Liberals were grasping at straws.

"I don't know what's going on with the (Liberal) political campaign — I know there's some infighting," Hudak said.

"I don't know if they've gone off the rails but definitely something happening there. There's obviously some distractions for Dalton McGuinty right now."

The Tories have promised to increase health-care funding by $6.1 billion and Hudak himself has said he has a new appreciation of front-line workers after the excellent care his daughter received when she was ill earlier this year.

While in Ottawa, McGuinty also raised the need for a 10-year health-care plan from the federal government and more funding. It's an issue he bought up during the federal election in May, but one that now had a stronger emphasis on seniors.

"We can do for seniors what the provinces did with the federal government in 2004 to get wait times down," he said. "I was there in 2004. It was myself and (Quebec Premier) Jean Charest ... we were holed up until early hours of the morning at 24 Sussex. It wasn’t easy ... but we got the job done."

The Liberal leader took a much lighter tone during the second half of his day, when he attended the International Plowing Match in Chute-a-Blondeau, Ont.

He hopped on a red tractor for the annual plowing competition, promising to stay dead in the centre as his campaign converged with that of the other two party leaders.

Your major mistake here is thinking that Hapers crime bill is actually designed to put real criminals behind bars. Theres a reason the bill introduces harsher penalties for pot smokers then it does for child rapists...it's designed to fill prisons, not counter crime.

Being from the U.S., the suggestion that Ontario could go Tory on all levels of government gives me the heebie jeebies. Many Canadians have told me your conservatives are not like our conservatives. Still, I urge you to be wary of electing all conservatives in your government. Just look at us. Conservatives can do a lot of damage even when they're AREN'T elected.

Personally, I LIKE having the shortest hospital wait times, the BEST public schools and building new hospitals instead of closing them. And I don't mind paying taxes to have those things.

Shortest hospital wait times? Like spending over 12 hours in emergency to receive treatment.

The best schools? Like lowering the standards so that the figures look better?

Get into the real World!

I've never waited that long in the emergency room and when my husband suffered a massive stroke 4 years ago, he was taken immediately and had great care. My 3 kids have all gone through the public school system, french immersion in fact, and they're all bilingual and doing well in college.

I LIVE in the real world and my personal experience supports what I said.

You must be one of Tim Hudak's relatives!!

He's right Reform PM Harper and Tea Party wannabe Hudak have hijacked both the Conservatives and the PC's. If I was a true blue Tory I'd be pissed at what Harper has done to conservatism in this country, call it what you will reform/alliance...it ain't your Grandfather's conservative party!

The Conservatives and the Progressive Conservatives chose their Leaders and are happy with them.

And there is no Tea Party in Canada. So close down watching the Daily Kos.

Fear-mongering 101 is alive and well. The suggestion that having the same political party at both the federal and provincial would be bad is laughable. Provinces understandbly look after themselves and the feds try and keep everyone happy.....both losing propositions. db

Oh my! It sounds as if his internal polling is getting him worried.

But if the three levels of government go Conservative, that will be the people's choice, not his.

This must be Mcguinty's latest scare tactic such as the ones he used in previous elections.

I think if the province moved to a ruling PC government, Harper would be more inclined to reward it's citizens for solidifying all the gains the Federal PCs garnered in last election. A win, win I say.

Fortunately, most intelligent people in Ontario still remember the disaster called Mike Harris.

Mike Harris had a big mess to clean up after Bob Rae. It was obviously a thankless job...

Mike was the best Premier of Ontario in the 46 years I have lived in the Province. It is only people who constantly have their hands out for money who think otherwise.
