Harper At The United Nations: PM Lobbies Against Palestinian Bid For Statehood In Meeting With Israeli PM Netanyahu

UNITED NATIONS, N.Y. - It was bonhomie on a first-name basis in the midst of an intense United Nations showdown.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Wednesday for his friendship with Israel, as the Jewish state courts support to block the Palestinian bid for UN statehood recognition here later this week.

At a photo-op inside UN headquarters which oozed warmth, the Israeli leader heaped unabashed praise on his friend "Stephen" for Canada's support for the Middle East peace process.

Canadian officials had scrambled to arrange the meeting between Netanyahu and Harper. It came together in the final hours of the prime minister's two-day visit to New York, overshadowing Harper's earlier events at the New York Stock Exchange.

Harper was forced to confront an issue that has caused him political headaches in the past, instead of being able to bask in his comfort zone on his favoured topic, the economy.

"I'd be remiss — without delving too much into what's going on here — to say, that we all do look forward to the day where the two sides are at the bargaining table and making the tough decisions necessary to have two peaceful, secure democratic states," Harper told Netanyahu as cameras whirred during a crowded photo-op.

During the brief photo op, the two men both said the solution to the Israel-Palestinian impasse lies in a resumption of two-way peace talks, not a United Nations declaration of statehood for Palestine.

"We know that nobody wants this more than our friends in Canada and our friend, the prime minister of Canada," said Netanyahu. "I want to say Stephen, we have a lot in common."

The Israeli leader added: "Same heart and same values. And that I say with great appreciation for your stance, for your conviction, for your friendship."

Harper, an outspoken supporter of Israel, opposes efforts by the Palestinians to win United Nations recognition of statehood. He says that move won't help the Middle East peace process.

But Harper did not address the General Assembly, which confined his public expression of support of Israel to a choreographed handshake for the cameras before having a private discussion.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird is to give Canada's speech to the General Assembly on Monday.

On Wednesday, U.S. President Barack Obama also met with Netanyahu, and later offered his support in his address to the General Assembly.

He said there would be no "shortcuts" to Middle East peace.

"Peace will not come through statements and resolutions at the United Nations — if it were that easy, it would have been accomplished by now," Obama said in his speech.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy essentially agreed.

He proposed a one-year timetable for a peace accord between the Israelis and Palestinians.

"Let us cease our endless debates," Sarkozy said. "Sixty years without moving one centimetre forward, doesn't that suggest that we should change the method and the scheduling here?"

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is to speak to the assembly on Friday and wants to bring the statehood motion before the Security Council.

The United States says it's prepared to veto the motion.

Earlier Wednesday, Harper spoke to American business leaders at the New York Stock Exchange.

It was part of a day of events that was designed to focus on Harper's stewardship of the relatively strong Canadian economy, while trumpeting the "political stability" his new majority government would provide for investors.

The prime minister pitched Canada as a great place for long-term investment because of its stable political environment, sound public finances and low tax environment.

He held a one-hour roundtable with eight top-flight U.S. executives from firms such as Barclays Capital, Goldman Sachs and United Technologies Corp.

The prime minister awoke in Manhattan to grim front-page assessments of the state of the U.S. economy.

The International Monetary Fund said this week the global economy is entering "a new dangerous phase." The IMF issued a downgraded economic outlook for the United States and Europe through to 2012.

"We're more than aware that although we like to talk about how we have been out performing our peers, we're nevertheless clearly part of the general trajectory of the global economy," Harper said at the start of the meeting. "We're concerned about it, as you can imagine."

Harper also gave a series of interviews Wednesday to a number of U.S.-based media outlets, as he has done on past trips to New York.

His only availability with Canadian reporters in New York over two days here was a three-question scrum in a UN corridor on Tuesday.

Not that shocking. It's Harper, so this sort of thing is expected from him.

I will say that the picture posted above speaks volumes. Netanyahu looks like he has the upper hand and Harper submissively follows.

Canadians can be proud of Harper, a man who is not afraid to stand up and do what is right and not bow to the threats of the arabs.

Harper is like the instant replay in a ball game. The US administration takes a position and has a news conference, and the next day Harper appears in the news taking the same position. So if you missed it the first time folks, tune in tomorrow.

I have a great deal of respect for the people of Canada, In my travels I've found them to be warm and genuine. Most of all, I've found them to be tolerant, very tolerant. American corporations and many of its politicians have no problem treating Canada as nothing more than an American asset to be used as necessary. In spite of many American's short-sightedness, most Canadians continue to be supportive and accepting of us.

It's sad that PM Harper feels obligated to side with US policy on this matter. The Canadian people deserve better. From what I have read, he is not the voice of the Canadian people on this matter.

Israel continually ignores UN sanctions for their actions against Palestine yet seeks UN help in denying recognized statehood for Palestine. Sheer hypocricy.

Interesting that you see this as ironic, but you don't see the irony in the palestinians approaching the same organization toward which they thumbed their nose a little over 63 years ago, claiming that their decision for a Partition was illegal. Yet today they'll seek it's approval :).

63 years is a long time. People die. Other people are born. Some have their own ideas even. Some don't know what went on 63 years ago. Etc.

You might want to find out why continued request from the Arabs to have resolution 181 considered by the international court of justice was refused and blocked.

Besides The U.N. Partition plan was never adopted and implemented by the security council.

You will note that on May 14 1948 Israel made a unilateral declaration of independence. Legally this is quite important. Why the need to declare your independence as a state in May of 1948. If the U.N. had already created the state in November 1947.

The fact was that in order for the U.N. Partition plan to be viable both sides needed to agree to it. The Arabs Rejection of the Partition plan was not thumbing there nose at the U.N.

The partition Plan was unfair. It gave a minority one third of the population over 50% of the land.

http://www.100megsfree4.com/lastone/politics/settlemendandpartition.jpg

Not only was the proportions of land division unfair, but the allocation to Israel also included the more productive land. Rivers run to the sea and Israel was allocated the northern coastal planes which included the vital water resources.

U.S. and Canada cast their lot with Israel....cuz that has worked so well up to now.

Israel is acting in a depraved , illegal manner and when they get called out on it, the only thing that occurs is an intensive P.R. campaign.
Harper and his Neocon-North circus have bought into the Norquist / new American Century paradigm.
About as un-Canadian as you can get.

Stop Harper.
Get involved early.
These politicians will take notice of actual signs of mounting opposition and temper their actions accordingly.
Do not wait until the next election, do not expect that someone else will do this in your name.

Remember : All that Harper does from this point on is in YOUR name. Do something about it !

With all do respect, you are naive if you truly believe that anything can be done to stop Harper at this point.

People are either part of the solution or part of the problem.
You appear to be among the latter.

That, plus you are wrong.

Get involved.
Call your local ABC reps ( NDP, Lib' Bloq' all of them, even if you don't vote for them )
Volunteer, canvas, petition, kiosk.
Be visible, loud, proud and defiant.
These local pols will assist you materially for actions of this nature.

Curling up in a fetal position will get you nowhere.
Every individual who becomes active represents something like a bloc of 10,000 voters to the political analysts.
Trust me, they take notice.

Has anyone poled Canadians and asked what there opinion is on Palestinian statehood?
That lipless weasle doesn't speak for me and yet claims to represent all Canadians. The political system in this country basically amounts to a dictatorship. Once you cast your vote, you have no say in anything for the next 5 years when your allowed to vote again.

You know Its very simple all Netanyahu has to do is call a freeze on settlements and talks could resume immediately. If he is not prepared to halt settlements then he not serious about the talks. That it pure and simple.

Halting settlements is one of the issues they can discuss if they talk.

In most situation involving legal issues where actions are being claimed as illegal. The court will issue an injunction stopping that activity until the legal issue is resolved. It would appear to me that Suggesting that settlements is an issue that can be discussed while that settlement process is continuing is an act of bad faith.

If the issue of settlements is to be truly on the table and that there is any possibility that such activity would be stopped it would seem reasonable to expect that such activity would be halted while talks are underway.

Continuing that activity indicates that there is no intention of seriously considering stopping.
