Lobster Night

Defence Minister Peter MacKay, under fire for flying in a military helicopter while on vacation in Newfoundland, also took a military Challenger business jet to reach his Nova Scotia riding for a lobster dinner, documents show.

The occasion that prompted use of the government jet was the 76th annual Pictou Lobster Carnival in July 2010.

The trip happened the day after a military search and rescue helicopter based in Gander, N.L., picked up MacKay from a fishing holiday on the Gander River.

Under questioning in the Commons on Thursday, MacKay defended arranging for the Cormorant helicopter, which he said was not for personal use but for work. He wanted to participate in a search and rescue demonstration with 103 Squadron at Gander and cut short his salmon fishing trip to do so.

“I think as minister of national defence, I should familiarize myself at every opportunity with those who perform these daily heroics," he said.

It costs about $32,000 an hour to fly a Cormorant.

After the demonstration, the rescue chopper took the minister to the Gander airport, where a Challenger jet was waiting to whisk him off to London, Ont., for an announcement.

Then MacKay got back on the Challenger and flew to Halifax, so he could attend the lobster carnival in his home riding, where he successfully defended his title as lobster banding champion.

Rules say the government's Bombardier Challengers can only be used if a trip is for official business. MacKay’s office says the lobster carnival fit this requirement, and that the trip to Pictou was government business.

But NDP defence critic Jack Harris doesn’t believe it.

"We're talking here about a minister who obviously sees the military assets as a means of convenience for his personal or political activities, and that’s wrong,” Harris said.

What do you think of Defence Minister Peter MacKay's use of the military's Challenger jet and Cormorant helicopter?

Inappropriate

Acceptable

Better than letting them sit on the ground

More critics in N.L.

On Thursday, more New Democrats from Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as the provincial Fisheries Union boss, spoke out against MacKay's use of the Cormorant.

St. John's area MP Ryan Cleary said he had asked for a tour of the rescue squadron in Gander because he was interested in better response times, but National Defence turned him down, saying a visit would interfere with operations.

The minister’s Cormorant trip offended Fisheries Union president Earle McCurdy, who has spoken about the need to improve search and rescue response times and who also opposes the closure of the St. John’s Rescue Centre.

“The attitude that they can have these facilities at their disposal like that, and at the same time tell people who make their living from a very dangerous job at sea that we're cutting down on the rescue services that are available to you — that's pretty hard to choke down.”

Provincial NDP Leader Lorraine Michael was shocked by what she considers MacKay’s lack of respect for the taxpayers' money.

“I mean where are their heads?” Michael asked. “Who does he think he is, you know? 'I'm a minister of the Crown, so I have the right to do this?’ No, as a matter of fact, as a minister you have a responsibility to spend the public monies wisely."

Officials' Challenger use scrutinized

After the Nova Scotia lobster carnival, MacKay flew to Calgary to spend two days at the Stampede. This time, however, he flew on a commercial airline, at a cost of a little under $1,600 — a far cry from the roughly $25,000 spent on the Challenger the day before.

Other flights of the federal government have also come under scrutiny this week. According to documents obtained by CBC News, a majority of flights on government-owned Challenger jets during June were taken by defence officials who could have used commercial aircraft.

The six Challenger jets logged 165 hours in June at a cost to taxpayers of almost $2 million, according to flight logs obtained by CBC News.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Gov. Gen. David Johnston are required to travel on the jets for security reasons. But other government officials, who do not need the extra security, took 60 per cent of the flights, according to flight logs.

Ugh, for Pete's sake people! Those aircraft are up in the air regardless of whether or not they're being used for a tasking or not. Pilots have to log a certain number of hours to keep their certification. The man is the Chief of Defense Staff. If he can hitch a ride when the aircraft isn't being tasked, then that is actually a better use of money that just having the thing fly around aimlessly. It's not like he took that aircraft away from a critical deployment.

If the man wants lobster, let the man have his lobster... Its tough running a country and some times, you need the extra time away to clear the mind and regain your focus. You should see how our Presidents are after a week or two at Camp David. Just wait, things are gonna be so much better when he returns.

Corporate slogan of CON Air? "All pigs are equal but CON pigs are more equal than others" Pete and the King of Pork can fly around and look down at the little people, very, very little. Maybe, if they're lucky they can fly with King Steve on Royal CON Air and eat filet mignon (from Aberta, of course) instead of those buggy things out of the ocean. (You know what lobsters do in the water? Everything! Ugh. Not royal at all.)
A billion here, a gazebo there, after awhile it adds up to something. Cut Old Age Pensions, disability pensions, unemployment insurance. Those lazy old, disabled people don't need government handouts - they should just work. Bring back the debtors' prisons!

MacKay is a nob. While the majority of the worlds military is managed by people with military experience, Canadas military is under the command of a lawyer.

Way to go Canada.

Oh for goodness sakes......

Hardly "inappropriate"
Completely "acceptable"

He is the current Defence Minister for crying out loud!!

Sure he could have had it all planned better but some how that did not happen.

Give it a rest. There's more important stuff to take care of.

The sense of entitlement and abuse of taxpayers money by those feeding at the public trough will never cease. There is something in the psyche of those who seek political office that manifests itself once elected. There is no political party immune from this and, the ability to put these pigs against the wall. as they do in less civililised countries, is limited to the vote, not something more drastic.

$32,000 is more than I earn in a whole year, and you can be sure that I dare not be in arrears when it comes to paying my taxes.

The bald-faced nerve , contempt and general lack of respect for Canadian Taxpayers seems to be a running theme for the 'neo-cons' in the 'Harper Goverment'. ( Now we know why steve insists on the Government of Canada being renamed the 'Harper Government'). He and his ' merry band of goof-ups' are so out of touch with the Average Canadian and the austerity measures many in today's society are required to undertake in order to make ends meet.

It's the assumption of prerogatives taken by MacKay,General Natynczyk and others, that are held only for The PM andThe GG. Unethical and possibly unlawful use of CDN Military resources seems especially low when we have so many enlisted men and women serving in harm's way while these ' jokers' rewrite their list of privileges to fit with their 'fictional self-
entitlement'. Disgusting.

It's time for CPC backbenchers to start crossing the floor and sit in opposition-- this government won't remain a majority for 4 years.

While I'd love to see that, I doubt it'll happen. Harper and McKay dislike one another but they both need this marriage of convenience for the sake of the brand. As for remaining a majority, one would need a compelling leader in opposition with a legitimate alternative plan and there isn't one at this time. Granted 4 years is a long time.

lol, I was being sarcastic, I know how ridiculous what he did is, I was poking fun at conservatives who will somehow justify this, or at the very least, dismiss it without admitting how their party savagely wastes money :)

The Tories are going to be nothing but hated come next election. It's one scandal after another these days. The scandals always seem to be about lavish spending too, which I thought was against their party ideology?

Remember the last Tory government? Mulroney? He left a sour taste in everyones mouth.

McKay seems to be my most disliked of the tories, something about him reeks of arrogance and unwarranted self importance.

Those Canadians who hate Harper and his government already hate him. The rest of the country will give the Tories a lot of leeway because they either don't care or, don't think the alternative would be any better or, fear something they perceive as "socialism" or,...

This government will hang itself before the next election. They accused the Liberals of having a sense of entitlement and there might have been some truth to that, but these guys are worse. They're self-righteous zealots with a leader who I'm pretty sure believes he talks to God..through Benjamin Netanyahu of course.
