Canada's Arctic Nearly Loses Entire Ice Shelf: Rapid Loss This Summer Blamed On Global Warming

Canada Arctic Ice Shelf Gone Global Warming

First Posted: 09/30/11 07:46 AM ET Updated: 09/30/11 04:17 PM ET

Two ice shelves that existed before Canada was settled by Europeans diminished significantly this summer, one nearly disappearing altogether, Canadian scientists say in new research.

The loss is important as a marker of global warming, returning the Canadian Arctic to conditions that date back thousands of years, scientists say. Floating icebergs that have broken free as a result pose a risk to offshore oil facilities and potentially to shipping lanes. The breaking apart of the ice shelves also reduces the environment that supports microbial life and changes the look of Canada's coastline.

Luke Copland is an associate professor in the geography department at the University of Ottawa who co-authored the research. He said the Serson Ice Shelf shrank from 79.15 square miles (205 square kilometers) to two remnant sections three years ago, and was further diminished this past summer.

Copland said the shelf went from a 16-square-mile (42-square-kilometer) floating glacier tongue to 9.65 square miles (25 square kilometers), and the second section from 13.51 square miles (35 square kilometers) to 2 square miles (7 square kilometers), off Ellesmere Island's northern coastline.

This past summer, Ward Hunt Ice Shelf's central area disintegrated into drifting ice masses, leaving two separate ice shelves measuring 87.65 and 28.75 square miles (227 and 74 square kilometers) respectively, reduced from 131.7 square miles (340 square kilometers) the previous year.
"It has dramatically broken apart in two separate areas and there's nothing in between now but water," said Copland.

Copland said those two losses are significant, especially since the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf has always been the biggest, the farthest north and the one scientists thought might have been the most stable.

"Recent (ice shelf) loss has been very rapid, and goes hand-in-hand with the rapid sea ice decline we have seen in this decade and the increasing warmth and extensive melt in the Arctic regions," said Ted Scambos, lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado, remarking on the research.

Copland, who uses satellite imagery and who has conducted field work in the Arctic every May for the past five years, said since the end of July, pieces equaling one and a half times the size of Manhattan Island have broken off. Co-researcher Derek Mueller, an assistant professor at Carleton University's geography and environmental studies department, said the loss this past summer equals up to three billion tons. Copland said their findings have not yet been peer reviewed since the research is new, but a number of scientists contacted by The Associated Press reviewed the findings, agreeing the loss in volume of ice shelves is significant.

Scambos said the loss of the Arctic shelves is significant because they are old and their rapid loss underscores the severity of the warming trend scientists see now relative to past fluctuations such as the Medieval Warm Period or the warmer times in the pre-Current Era (B.C.).
Ice shelves, which began forming at least 4,500 years ago, are much thicker than sea ice, which is typically less than a few feet (meters) thick and survives up to several years.

Canada has the most extensive ice shelves in the Arctic along the northern coast of Ellesmere Island. These floating ice masses are typically 131 feet (40 meters) thick (equivalent to a 10-story building), but can be as much as 328 feet (100 meters) thick. They thickened over time via snow and sea ice accumulation, along with glacier inflow in certain places.

The northern coast of Ellesmere Island contains the last remaining ice shelves in Canada, with an estimated area of 217 square miles (563 square kilometers), Mueller said.

Between 1906 and 1982, there has been a 90 percent reduction in the areal extent of ice shelves along the entire coastline, according to data published by W.F. Vincent at Quebec's Laval University. The former extensive "Ellesmere Island Ice Sheet" was reduced to six smaller, separate ice shelves: Serson, Petersen, Milne, Ayles, Ward Hunt and Markham. In 2005, the Ayles Ice Shelf whittled almost completely away, as did the Markham Ice Shelf in 2008 and the Serson this year.

"The impact is significant and yet only a piece of the ongoing and accelerating response to warming of the Arctic," said Dr. Robert Bindschadler, emeritus scientist at the Hydrospheric and Biospheric Sciences Laboratory at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.

Bindschadler said the loss is an indication of another threshold being passed, as well as the likely acceleration of buttressed glaciers able to flow faster into the ocean, which accelerates their contribution to global sea level.

Copland said mean winter temperatures have risen by about 1 degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit) per decade for the past five to six decades on northern Ellesmere Island.

CORRECTION: In an earlier version of this story, The Associated Press reported based on wrong information that the last remaining ice shelves in Canada along the coast of Ellesmere Island cover an estimated 402 square miles. Those measurements were for the end of the last century. The ice shelves' estimated area today is 217 square miles. Separately, the AP reported erroneously that the Serson Ice Shelf shrank to two remnant sections five years ago. It shrank to two remnant sections three years ago.

I love to read stories about glaciers and ice caps melting. Many years ago I predicted that the day would come when the dust storms of the midwest would blanket D.C. with soil at the same time the waters of the Potomac would lap at the steps of the Capitol. I will not live to see this happen, but every day the waters rise and more of the US is converted to a new dust bowl. My ghost will say "I told you so!"

Sorry deniers, its changed. In 1964 I was walking above the telephone wires on two pieces of road that drifted heavily. The plows just kept piling it up until you couldn't see the telephone and electric wires. My son is 36 and doesn't remember anything higher than 6 feet. By 1984 it was raining in January. Yeah, it gets cold and it gets hot but geological studies don't show it happening that fast in the past. We will do in 200 years what nature does in 10,000. Deny all you want, it won't change the hell on earth you are helping create. Deny all you want, you're killing your grandchildren

The republican party cries' All the debt' we will leave our children.....

well start cutting that debt by reducing military spending- and roiling back tax levels for the upper 10% and the corporations to where they where in 1962..

if the anti science- global warming deniers think we have too much debt now- consider this;

James Hansen said a few days ago that if we continue on a BAU path with emissions- The American south could become 'uninhabitable'

If the south is uninhabitable, then we need to find new places for that population to live.

And, we need to replace the agricultural production that is lost to heat.

And, we need to replace the industrial production that was located in the south.

As rational projects, these activities would take generations of planning, capital accumulation, and phased construction. Now, it is likely we will do them in a panic and that will be very expensive.

The folks that argued for delay on the basis of cost were not very smart.

You know, that debt garbage is just a smokescreen, and it's absolutely ridiculous that the Democrats bought that crap lock, stock, and barrel. Republicans worrying about debt is an oymoron. Ain't gonna ever happen. Even if we were in a parallel universe. Republicans CREATE debt--they don't reduce it.

The debt has been elevated to be the artificial crisis du jour because:

1) Making this a "problem" will make it easier to strip the American people of programs THEY'VE PAID FOR--Social Security and Medicare. Think about this--if these programs are gutted you have just financed THE BIGGEST TAX INCREASE IN THE HISTORY OF THE REPUBLIC. To the tune of 15% of your lifetime earnings.

2) Keeping you freaked out about debt will make you pay less attention to the GOP cuts to jobs, Now a sane person would understand that if you actually want to resolve debt, first you have to solve unemployment so you have a stable platfrom from which to address debt.

The GOP is really seeking to destroy America's middle and lower classes. Too damn bad the Democrats having been calling them on this. 100 times a day would not be too much.

when History is written, or if there is a Furure to recall History, the failure to rescue our Earth from becoming decimated by profiteers and politicians, will not be believed.
How could a habitat so GRAND with inconceiveable Beauty and Engineering Perfection from a Beatific Creator, be caused to die ?
How could a Con Job so blanket the nations with lies and propaganda to perpetrate continued pollution and ruin, for lives and land. ?
It willl not believed that entities built of brick and mortar and profit sheets would be a decisive factor in our government to maintain our existence
And so we perish

And so we perish indeed, Galene!!! Some deniers exclaim that climate has varied for millions of years and will continue to do so, so why worry!!! They fail to realize that these changes usually include the death of up to 90% of the population at the time!!

The bright lights who deny climate change forget that while we need the earth to survive, it doesn't need us!!!!

Just look at that deep, dark, light absorbing ocean compared to the bright, light reflecdting surface of the ice.

Who is loony enought to say that there is not going to be any additional heat retention going on because of that, eh denialists?

At some point in the future, the facts about global warming and the resulting climate changes from it will become so blindlingly obvious that even fossil fuel owned politicians like Rick Perry and Jimmy Inofe not be able to keep denying the truth in public like they do now. Seeing them recant their past positions will be very entertaining to see.

For the sake of national solidarity, lets hope it happens sooner rather than later.

06:47 AM on 10/01/2011
The buzz words " Global Warming " and " Not True " come to mind and seem to be related in the sheer fact that they exist but we deny it, reason we like our lifestyle so much that destroying our planet comes second.
Even though the " Signs of the Times are all here and we are shown by our creator daily the damage that we do, still we ignore them in favor or living our own way. The " Watchwords" of melting ice caps and climate change are uttered daily now, when in the past they were only spoken odd occasions, we still ignore them as we " WANT " our own way.
So when we have no water to drink and food is overpriced and people starve in parts of the world never heard of before, is it then we wake up to the " TRUTH " but then it will be too late.

You see all those words are watch words and all bigger than the buzz words as we are so blind to the truth we are not even able to see " HOW, WHAT and WHEN it all went WRONG.

Well, look on the bright side. Since these ice bergs are floating around and might cause danger to oil rigs, maybe they'll sink his fishing boat as well. It is kind of ironic that the more the ice melts. the more rigs that can be put in, and the more rigs that can be taken out by ice bergs. Who says nature doesn't have a sense of humor?

In the meantime, the use of the market to promote investment in and development of new clean energy generation technologies, is not only vital for the survival of the country because of it's environment, but also vital to reinvigorate the economy.

Unless, you like most of the Republicans think that it would be nicer if China made all the money out of exporting these new technologies.

"Copland said mean winter temperatures have risen by about 1 degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit) per decade for the past five to six decades on northern Ellesmere Island." A rise of almost 2% per decade seems insignificant. Multiplied by 5 or 6 decades is very unusual and troubling. Looking at pictures of where the ice was 5 years ago compared to what's happening now, seems threatening. Let's think about the coming few years. Temperature continues ascending speeding up the melting. Throw in the North Pole, Greenland and a bit of Antartica. Everyone around large bodies of water should be able to swim. The best is yet to come. Not only the ice is melting. So is the perma-frost. I sure all of you deniers know that, next to the ocean floor, perma-frost holds the largest deposits of dormant methane gas. As this frozen earth melts, it release huge amounts of this gas which become active and will more than double the effect of CO2 on heat-retention. This is happening as I type. Are we going to continue arguing about this until it is too late?? Or are we going to come together and demand action? Make sure we at least try to clean up our mess. For our kids.
