'Mega-Quarry' Protesters Gather At Queen's Park

A few hundred protesters turned up at Queen’s Park in Toronto on Friday to protest a massive limestone quarry proposed for development north of Orangeville.

The mega-quarry would span more than 800 hectares — about one third the size of downtown Toronto — and create a crater one and a half times as deep as Niagara Falls.

Those opposed to the project are concerned about losing a massive swath of rich farmland and are also worried about the quarry’s effect on the water table.

"Digging up 2,000 acres of some of the richest agricultural land in the country. This is just a bad idea," said cattle rancher Carl Cosack, who attended Friday’s protest and who owns property in the area. "Everyone downstream is affected.”

The U.S. company behind the proposal, Highland Companies, said they've listened to these concerns and are taking steps to protect the environment.

The company says the limestone quarry would provide an essential supply of aggregate, which is used to build everything from homes to roads.

In a statement, the company added: "The design of the proposed quarry balances environmental protection while also responding to market conditions."

But protesters say no amount of aggregate is worth destroying such rich farmland.

"We're nourished by that land,” said protester Paul DeCampo. “So it's logical that we would stand up and protect it."

The quarry project has become an issue for politicians leading up to Thursday's provincial election.

In early September, just prior to the start of the campaign, Liberal Leader Dalton McGuinty ordered an environmental assessment into the project.

Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak said Highland Companies should "go back to the drawing board" and amend the project to take into account residents' concerns.

We all have to accept that there's a huge demand for stone and gravel and that quarries will be a necessary (although ugly) part of our landscape in Ontario for years to come. However, THIS quarry is unlike any other. Hoisted upon a community that was lied to and deceived, it has the potential to have a devastating effect on local farming, wildlife, roads, air, and our water FOREVER. Once done, it can't be undone. I deeply hope that people who think this is a "NIMBY" issue do their research about THIS quarry proposal, because the only people who truly want it at this point in time are the greedy investors who stand to make billions of dollars from raping this beautiful landscape. Investors who have NO concerns about the water, the land, or the possible consequences of this mega disaster.

Never mind going back to the drawing board. Keep going. Get out. We do not need this.

What is so unconscionable, is that for years, Highland Companies deceived Ontario residents, posing as a potato farming company and quietly buying up thousands of acres of land from local farmers. Then, it was suddenly revealed that the massive plot of farmland would be converted into a limestone quarry.

This is how these people work. They deceive and mislead to get what they want. Can they be trusted with anything they say now? I think not. Shut them down.

The Highland Group (a hedge fund) bought up prime Ontario farmland saying they were potato farmers, when if fact they were miners. The proposal will dig a quarry larger than Niagara Falls (never been done before ), use toxic explosives and send 300 hundred trucks through communities 24 hours , 360 days a year. The water, has a great chance of being poisoned ,1 million people drink this water. The natural habitat of over 1 hundred wildlife species will be destroyed. Limited environmental study has been done. This now beautiful area provides Ontario with produce, seeds, recreation, and most importantly WATER.

Noise , pollution, hundreds of trucks (going painfully slow), extra railway cars, and money going to investors (not even in Canada.)...horrid!

We need stone to build roads and houses. Where are we going to get it? We cannot continue to operate under the principle of NIMBY. I very well remember the Green Party candidate in my area saying that it took 300 loads of gravel to build an average home. That includes YOUR home.

Think about it.

Why is unending growth of homes, roads and everything else seen as a good idea? Shouldn't protection of what we Ontarians have and value right now trump future developers' profits? True, people want to live here, but we already live here. Surely our actual rights trump the potential rights of non-residents! When we die they can leave their own places and have our houses, but not now.
