Ozone Hole Over Arctic 'Unprecedented,' Caused By Extremely Cold Weather: Scientists

Ozone Artic Loss Hole

First Posted: 10/02/11 07:10 PM ET Updated: 12/02/11 05:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON - Scientists say an unprecedented ozone "hole" opened up above the Arctic last year, caused by an unusually prolonged period of extremely low temperatures in the stratosphere.

A NASA-led study says the amount of ozone destroyed was comparable to that seen in some years in the Antarctic, where an ozone "hole" has formed each spring since the mid 1980s.

Scientists from 19 institutions in nine countries, including Canada and the United States, were involved in the research.

They found that at some altitudes, the cold period in the Arctic lasted more than 30 days longer in 2011 than in any previously studied Arctic winter, leading to the unprecedented ozone loss.

This year's ozone loss occurred over an area considerably smaller than that of the Antarctic ozone holes.

That's because the Arctic polar vortex, a persistent large-scale cyclone within which the ozone loss takes place, was about 40 per cent smaller than a typical Antarctic vortex.

The stratospheric ozone layer, extending from about 15 to 35 kilometres above the surface, protects life on Earth from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays, which can cause skin cancer and other medical conditions.

"The chemical reactions that produce ozone-destructive chlorine compounds occur on the surfaces of cold polar stratospheric cloud and aerosol particles," said Lamont Poole, a co-author of the paper and a scientist at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va.

"These particles were abundant in the Arctic until mid March 2011 - much later than usual - with average amounts at some altitudes similar to those observed in the Antarctic, and dramatically larger than the near-zero values seen in March in most Arctic winters," Poole said.

The 1989 Montreal Protocol limits production of ozone-depleting substances.

The study was published on Sunday online in the journal Nature.

Oh those silly scientists... always trying to tell us the planet has problems. Those pesky scientific studies waste time and money when we should be worrying about who we're allowed to marry.

Just another cycle. Animals flourish for a while and are killed off by mother nature. Millions of years later animals get another chance. Cycle complete.

Extreme and prolonged cold in the stratosphere last winter and spring speed up and enhanced the chemical reactions that destroy the ozone, says co-author Michelle Santee, of the Jet propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute for Technology. Her group was monitoring the hole from space using satellites.

The ozone-destroying chlorine compounds have been banned internationally, but they are so “long lived” the scientists expect them to stay in the atmosphere for decades.

Not banned, but in the process of being phased out by 2030.

So global warming caused the extremely cold weather that caused the hole in the ozone layer. And all these years I thought ozone holes were caused by CFCs. Were those scientists wrong?

One of the authors seems to offer a reasonable explanation in the text above ([...] added)

` "The chemical reactions that produce ozone-destructive chlorine compounds [from CFCs] occur on the surfaces of cold polar stratospheric cloud and aerosol particles...

I am a full believer in climate change, I love it Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. 99% scientist are CORRECT!

I don't like autumn, winter, and Vernal Equinox. I don't like autumn because the trees become dormant, cooler temperatures, and more cloudy days. I don't like winter because outside there are subzero temperatures, crappy snow, school delays and cancellations, slick roads, accidents, etc. I don't like spring, because throughout the spring season there are too many rainy days along with overcast skies and days, as well as mild-temperatures and having to wear a jacket even temperatuers are in the low-60s

Indeed.

Anyone who follows global warming closely would already have known that *climate change* cools the stratosphere directly, but overall there is a net increase in heat.

I don't see a problem. Do you?

Interesting, but no need to worry about the loss of ozone and rising skin cancers. It only occurs during the winter, when there is little to no sunlight at the pole, thus no need to block UV radiation there. Once the sunlight comes back, the ozone reappears, as it's created by sunlight in the first place. Ozone is an extremely reactive gas, and will bind to just about any molecule it can find, and will dissappear on its own w/o sunlight constantly creating a fresh supply.

The cycle of life and eath the planet is beinning it's long cycle of hibernation and unfortunately, that means thoses on it very harsh life, and lots' of dying because food/water/air along with nuclear disaters combined with everything else ,i wouldn't want to be kid or in my teens now, because the future of this planet is going to be harsh living,plagues/famine/water shortage/air contaminated with nuclear accidents points too bleak scenario for the planet, not to worry it will cleanse itself and come back like it always does, after it shakes off a few billion of the fleas that it can't support, since man can't control it's population ,the planet does it for them.

A prolonged period of extended extremely cold weather in the upper stratosphere?

Good job we have Global Warming then!

If it wasn't for all the climate scientists falsifying data to support global warming theories, we might have caught this a lot earlier?

I'm curious. If we keep depleting ozone, we will see more cases of skin cancer. Who is most likely to be affected by skin cancer?

I can't help thinking of a few what-if's. When the GOP takes control in 2012, they will eliminate the ACA. Also, they will eliminate all workplace regulations, so employers will not only fire their employees to get a cheaper work force, but they will also stop providing health insurance, so the vast majority of people will be at the mercy of the private insurance companies.

What if skin cancer cases multiply, and what if insurance companies decide that light complexions are a pre-existing condition? What if blondes suddenly find their insurance policies cancelled or re-written to exclude coverage for skin cancer? Would this be racial profiling, or are health insurance companies just trying to maintin a healthy profit margin by removing health risks from their insurance pools?

If we keep using and abusing Mother Nature, we'll discover that Mother Nature can be a real witch. (I really meant to use a word that rhymes with witch, but decided to keep this blog PG. But you know what I mean.)

I know this blog will cause fair-skinned folks to have hissy-fits, but vote for a GOP victory in 2012, and you might find out that my predictions are quite accurate. So consider this a Fair Warning.

You seem to imply that you believe global warming is not caused by humans by saying 'AGW' instead of just Global Warming (Which is the text-book definition of a denialist). Instead, you're attacking the very theory of global warming by saying some random incomprehensible jibberish.
I'm curious, are you among the 2% of scientists who think global warming is real but NOT caused by humans, are you among the 0% of everyone who out-right denies global warming?

Actually, It was Harper who had the side deal with the Bloc.

I was thinking of merging NDP and Liberals - or Greens and NDP. You know so the 60% of us who did not vote for Harper could have a voice.

Ironic that Hitler also had 36% of Germany's popular vote. The left never merged back then either, before there was a fake terroist attack on the Riechstag, and emergency War Act was imposed. Just saying..

In August of 1958, the submarine USS Nautilus submerged under the ice cap at Barrow Alaska, and sailed under the North Pole. They surfaced about 1400 mi. later in Greenland.
53 yrs later, you can sail a ship there. Anybody see a problem with that?
