Montreal To Get New Champlain Bridge

Champlain Bridge

The federal government is set to announce plans to replace Montreal's aging Champlain Bridge.

CBC News has learned Federal Transport Minister Denis Lebel is due in Montreal Wednesday for a bridge announcement.

It's expected Lebel will call for further study to decide whether a new bridge or tunnel would best replace the Champlain.

The bridge, Canada's busiest, opened in 1962 and has needed major repairs for years.

A recent report on the bridge's condition estimated that major repairs to prolong its life would cost an estimated $25 million over the next decade.

The report, released in July, concluded the bridge would have to be replaced eventually, even with repairs.

And the report recommends dedicated public transit lanes, whether a bridge or tunnel is built.

Carbon fiber bridge will last, but is said to be about double the cost of normal bridgework. All other types are less expensive till cost overruns make sure this disappears. The renovation was the least expensive but cost overruns hide the best in that tried and true scheme.
Same with the super hospital in Montreal with the supposedly free dental clinic section extremes of the rave movement and some with extreme dental problems a bit beyond private dental care in this province and possible future american state like vermont is if sov debate goes wary and Canada might go too right wing even for right wing PQ if true.

It is sad that because of today's labor costs, big infrastructure projects are unaffordable. The Champlain used to be a toll bridge, they took out the tolls in the late 80's if memory serves. You can still see the remians of the toll plaza on the Montreal side. My only problem is that if they were to toll the new bridge, I doubt that the toll would ever be removed, even once the construction cost are recuperated.

I wonder if Harper told the Quebec government, if this bridge gets Federal funding and is a Federal bridge, it must be constructed by non-Quebec construction workers. Seeing we know how shady they all are.

Except Harper wants to claim he created jobs in Quebec to get votes here.

Nope and trust me, Quebec will never combine the taxes either.

Actually, they are already combined and has been for a very long time, they just never called it HST. This is why they are getting the $1.2B, as compensation for having done it back when.

The tax situation is even worse than the HST here. The provincial tax is taxed on top of the federal tax.
