Crash Shuts QEW Eastbound
A 16-year-old boy was airlifted to hospital following a crash Friday afternoon that totalled a car on the Queen Elizabeth Way west of Toronto.
The car was travelling northbound on a street perpendicular to the highway when it crossed a service road and smashed through the cement noise barrier on the south side of the highway near, entering the QEW.
"This vehicle went right through that T intersection, through the sound barrier wall, and then right onto the QEW, striking numerous other vehicles. And then we have the debris from the cement that crashed through also onto the highway, as well as the steel guardrail also demolished at this location as well," Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Dave Woodford said.
The incident happened near Cawthra Road. The eastbound QEW was closed and backed up to at least Erin Mills Parkway in Mississauga for several hours, but reopened after 6 p.m. ET with the right lane still blocked. All lanes on the westbound portion of the highway remained open, but traffic was slow in the hours following the crash.
The boy was flown to St. Michael's Hospital in downtown Toronto with life-threatening injuries.
Three other people whose vehicles were involved in the crash suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital by ambulance.
