Donald Dube Killed In Deer Attack: New Brunswick Farmer Attacked While Feeding Herd

SAINT-LEONARD, N.B. - A New Brunswick man who was attacked by a male deer died after a violent struggle, the RCMP said Wednesday.

Donald Dube, 55, was killed Sunday evening while feeding his herd of domesticated deer behind his home in Saint-Leonard.

RCMP Sgt. Marc Violette said investigators believe the dominant buck in the herd attacked and killed Dube with its antlers and hoofs.

Violette said there were signs of a struggle so violent that Dube was missing a boot and sock when his body was found by officers in a pen where the animals were kept.

"The animal probably stomped on him and used his antlers to rough him up and throw him around like a rag doll," he said.

An autopsy concluded that Dube suffered massive internal injuries.

Violette said the homeowner went out to feed the animals and his wife got worried when he didn't return home or answer her calls to his cellphone. She called police, who went to the rural home to find Dube's body.

Violette said it's rutting season — a time of year when bucks compete against each other to mate with does.

"It's obvious he was attacked by one of the bucks, the dominant male in the herd," he said.

"Adult male deer this time of year have significant antlers and in the wild they are very adept at using them to fend off predators —coyotes, foxes, rabid dogs, what have you."

He said the bucks use their racks to pin their adversary to the ground, then put all their weight on them.

"All their weight is on their neck and they'll grind. Those antlers are sharp and they'll poke skin and muscle tissue very easily."

Violette didn't know why Dube kept deer, but suspects it was a hobby and "for a bit of meat here and there."

There is nothing shocking about this . Its simply a mother protecting her baby . This type reaction should be expected from any species .The owner of the dog is fully responsible and should know better .

The media could be more responsible in educating humans concerning their interactions with other animals. The male of any species that has a mating season is to be avoided in terms of physical contact and treated with caution. Mother Nature ups the hormone levels in order to accomplish two things primarily: that the male will fight for his right to mate by subduing or chasing away any other males and he himself will have the necessary drive to complete intercourse with willing females.

I am surprised that the farmer did not realize and respect that. It is sad in the extreme that most humans, in particular males, are not as educated in the ways of Nature and, therefore, do not act prudently and respectfully toward males of other species.

My heartfelt condolences go to the farmer's wife, family and friends. Perhaps he will not have died in vain if somehow they can join with media sources to educate others re the appropriate behaviors "in season." [It would behoove male humans to realize that human females have cycles, too, as well as age-appropriate preferences with respect to mating or sexual contact.]

He should have been more specific. New York Puerto Ricans or what? There are Black, triguenos, brown, mulatos, white and all inbetween. So how is it racism? IT is a group of people who in particular areas have a reputation. I lived in Puerto Rico for two years and no one stuck anyone where I was............ Once in a while one got drunk and got in a fight. I found most to be afraid to fight anyone their own size. Gang members are another story. Then is saying Obama hates white people like I believe make me racist? ,

It's OK for people to kill animals but when an animal kills a person it's a big deal. I say live and let live. Has anyone ever seen all the deer standing on the Garden State Parkway looking for food? It's really sad because humans (without consideration) destroy all the forests and these animals have no place to live.

I feel bad for the man but why is he feeding deer at this time of year? They have plenty of food in the fall. Oh, sorry they're domesticated deer. But still, he should know about rutting season if he is raising them. The males are very dangerous because they are very strong and unpredictable to the point where even the farmer is seen as a potential rival. Condolences to his family and friends.

These were not wild animals, they were kept in a fence by this man. It is reported in the news he kept deer fenced on his property for the past 10 years. It showed the fence they were held in, a chain link type enclosure near a house.

It was just reported on CBC New Brunswick 5PM newscast that the family had the entire herd of captive deer shot to death today.

I kind of thought the same thing b/c the beginning of the confrontation was not filmed first of all. Then when this deer is stomping his head, his wife continues to film without screaming or especially not helping her husband. It looked like it was staged prob. for youtube.

That video is not related to this story at all, it is an old video that has been online for a couple years. I don't know why they posted it in this article.

That being said, regarding the video. I agree with you...why would anyone just keep filming and not be trying to stop the attack. That is bizarre!

You do have to be careful of deer during mating season which is right about now. The males are territorial and occasionally will go after dogs or other deer if they think they are encroaching on their mating territory. I worked for a veterinarian for a while and we saw a number of dogs gored by deer usually at this time of year although it's not a frequent occurence. Normally they are very peaceful animals.
