Feds Launch War Of 1812 Anniversary Plans

War Of 1812

A new memorial in the nation's capital and a series of commemorative events are among the plans announced Tuesday by the federal government to mark the bicentennial of the War of 1812.

Heritage Minister James Moore released details of the government's plans at an event in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., and they include an education campaign to raise awareness among Canadians about the historic struggle.

"We don't do enough in this country to protect our past, to teach our past, to get kids involved and to learn about this country's brilliant history and the important moments of our past," Moore said. "There is no greater example of that than the War of 1812. Not enough Canadians know about the importance of the War of 1812. It was the fight for Canada."

The federal government wants to mark the 200th anniversary of the war in 2012 in a big way and over the next four years it will spend $28 million on the following:

- An educational campaign on the war.

- Supporting up to 100 historical re-enactments, commemorations, and local events.

- A permanent 1812 memorial in Ottawa.

- Interactive tours, six exhibits, and improvements to three national historic sites across the country.

- Investing in infrastructure at key 1812 battle sites, including Fort Mississauga and Fort York in Ontario.

October 2012 will also be designated as a month of commemoration and Moore named Sir Isaac Brock, Charles-Michael de Salaberry, Tecumseh, and Laura Secord as some of the heroes that will be honoured during that time.

Moore said the War of 1812 was a defining moment in Canada's history and had the English and French militias and Aboriginal Canadians not worked together with British military forces, the American invasions would not have successfully been repelled.

"Without the War of 1812 Canada as we know it would not exist," said Moore.

A new website has also been launched as part of the educational initiative.

What an oh so subtle way of giving our neighbours the middle finger...and with that wasted taxpayer money, we Canadians too!

So how much of that $28 million will go to Clement's riding?

What's the point ? To remind Americans how their expansionist ambitions were slammed shut north of the 49th parallel ? Or maybe so we can feel proud as a nation for having burnt their whitehouse with help from the British back before we were known as Canadians ?

This sounds more like celebrating pre-history. What's next ? Are we going to have a monument to the meteor which killed the dinosaurs ? It did pave the way for human dominance of this planet.

Typical chickenhawk Con B.S. Guess that money just couldn't be spent on something worthwhile.
What a bozo project - worth exactly nothing.

as long as Steve doesn't use the $28mil for another Tory pork fest in Ontario or give no bid contracts to shady Que construction firms I have no problem with it.

Harper is going to introduce redcoat uniforms to commemorate the war of 1812 to go with the royal designation of our armed forces. Roll Harper photo op. Waste of money for a war that was a tie at best.

And why exactly are we doing this? To poke a stick in the eye of America?

Ironic that Harper wants to celebrate Canada's victory over the Americans at the same time he's slowing transforming us into the 51st state via his prison-building, warrant-less spying & austerity agenda. Not to mention his aggressive, bull-headed, militarized foreign policy.

What utter waste of tax payers' money. If we haven't put a plague up yet then it must not have been anything but a footnote. Besides did we really win?

Also, why are we putting an 1812 memorial in Ottawa? What on earth did Ottawa have to do with the War of 1812?

They do realize that War of 1812 never just happened in 1812, right? Why are we having major celebrations next year? Why are we commemorating the Start Of the war? Wouldn't it make more sense to celebrate the end of the war? Shouldn't we be concentrating more on the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the war... in 1814 (though some skirmishes and battles occurred after that point due to the slow travel of news with fighting continuing into 1815). Or how about we celebrate Feb. 17, 1815, the day the treaty as ratified by the States, and the war officially ended? 2012 doesn't make sense to me as a time for the more important celebrations.

Do the re-enactments involve burning down the White House again? Just asking. Yes, I know it was 1814 and it was technically the British colony of Upper Canada (mostly) that marched and burned la Maison Blanche but who really wants to nit pick that? Seriously, it should be an interesting bit of history re-education. Our side has certain plans. I just wonder what the LOSERS of that war will do and say.

Maybe a small burning house like the old "burning schoolhouse" fireworks from when I was kid.

A full scale mock-up would cost another few milion that we don't have.

Privatize it please. We need to pay down the debt. And what about the Plains of Abraham? You wrote anti-Semetic laws, and conceded to Quebec, so why this? Man Harper you are a phony.

Hmmm, the British loose in 1812/1816, we are all American. America is slightly more to the left of centre, maybe even more closely aligned with the UK. Oh and the Federal Tories don't exist, maybe that's why they care so much about the war?

Hey I've got an idea, instead of spending hundreds of millions on another ad scam, pay down the deficit!

Perhaps Harper can commemorate the War of 1812 with a flypast of American no bid F35s.
