British Monarchy Succession: David Cameron Consults Canada, Commonwealth On Changes To Gender, Faith Rules

LONDON - Britain's government is pushing its plan to change the rules on royal succession to provide equal treatment for princes and princesses, the British prime minister said Wednesday.
David Cameron has written to Canada and 14 other Commonwealth nations where the Queen is head of state requesting their views on modernizing succession.
Under the proposal, the first child of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge would eventually become monarch — regardless of sex. As the law stands now, an elder daughter would be passed over in favour of a younger brother.
"We espouse gender equality in all other aspects of life and it is an anomaly that in the rules relating to the highest public office we continue to enshrine male superiority," Cameron wrote in his letter.

The changes would also lift a centuries-old ban on British monarchs marrying Roman Catholics — a rule Cameron described in his letter as a "historical anomaly" since it does not bar those who take spouses of other faiths.
"We do not think it can continue to be justified," Cameron said.
Cameron said he will be discussing the proposals when he meets with leaders from Commonwealth countries at a summit in Australia later this month.
"It isn't an easy issue to sort and for many of them there might be issues and worries about starting a parliamentary or other legal process," Cameron told British lawmakers. "But I am very clear that it is an issue we ought to get sorted and I would be delighted to play a role in doing that."
Buckingham Palace has always refrained from commenting on the political issue, saying it's a matter for the government.
The prime minister's office said the Queen would not be part of the discussions.
Pressure to change the laws of succession has been mounting since William's marriage to the former Kate Middleton in April.
The thorny issue of succession has been an on and off topic in Britain, but it has never been resolved. In 2009, then prime minister Gordon Brown's government considered a bill that would end the custom of putting males ahead of females in the succession line, as well as lift the ban on British monarchs marrying Roman Catholics. The government did not have time to pursue it before Brown left office.
The rule has kept women from succeeding to the throne in the past. Queen Victoria's first child was a daughter — also called Victoria — but it was her younger brother who succeeded to the throne, as King Edward VII.
Experts say they hope the matter will be resolved before Middleton begins having children to avoid a confusing line of succession like that in Sweden, where a rule change led to a title being passed from a prince to his elder sister.
Downing Street has previously acknowledged that elements of the 1701 Act of Succession, which also bars Roman Catholics from succeeding to the throne, were "discriminatory" but said change would be "difficult and complex."

There should be no job in Canada that is not available to any Canadian citizen willing to do the work to earn the position, so Canada should refuse to consent to a change in the Act of Succession unless it is a complete overhaul of how the kings and queens of Canada are selected.
With a tip to Twitter, I can imagine the hash tags #KateMiddleton #PregnantWithGirl #ModernizeTheMonarchy #FirstBorn #RestoreHRH #DiannaPrincessOfWales
When Dianna died, When William asked his grandmother if his mother could be burried with "HRH" on the coffin, the Queen said no. Now, with Kate pregnant with a girl. Both William and Kate want to end discrimination. William witnessed monarcy discrimination against his aunt and his mother, Dianna. However the Princess of Wales used these experiences to made Will think better of women.
Now we fully support Kate and William's move to end discrimination in the English Monarchy, and ENGLAND should give William what he asked for his grandmother for. HRH, Dianna, Princess of Wales
And hash tag this: In #ModernizingTheMonarchy perhaps ENGLAND can show some mercy on #DianaTheMartyrSaintOfOutsiders

Of course the 1701 Act of Succession was implemented because of political and religious strife in the U.K. at the time. It was enacted to bring stability to the Nation, and peace to the religious establishment of the country. It served it's purpose well. Only those in positions of power now can determine if it's time is up, and new rules are appropriate. We may not need a Kind to lead the Armed Forces, but we've had many very successful ones including King George V and VI. Of course we can't leave out Queen Elizabeth I and her reign that saw the defeat of the Armada either of course. The Institution should be fine tuned to be continually relevant and serve it's function of political stability. Political stability is the thing that makes economies work eh. Without it, you got nothing . . . . ask an American how's it goin' and find out.

As a social comment only and without regard to whether I approve or disapprove of the Monarchy, their is no legal or moral reason to hang on to the midieval tradition of "Only men can rule". If the British government and the Crown wish to join the social order of the western 21st century, then it is time to lose the "Male Dominance " thing and get on with it. Doesn't matter whether they should or should not exist, it is whether they need to adapt as part of a personal survival strategy.

I used to feel that way until Harper got into office. Our system is set up so he cannot rule us like a king he is not the leader of the country only the Prime Minister.
Otherwise we would be like the US at the mercy of politicians playing with our lives are you ready for that?.
I want the senate gone by 65 or 55 or better yet let them be elected to the senate and accountable to those that elect them.
