Canada Should Arrest George W. Bush On B.C. Visit Next Week: Amnesty International

George W Bush Amnesty International Arrest

First Posted: 10/12/11 11:57 AM ET Updated: 12/12/11 05:12 AM ET

OTTAWA - Amnesty International wants the federal government to arrest former U.S. president George W. Bush when he visits British Columbia next week.

The rights body said both Canadian and international law require Canada to detain Bush and investigate him for war crimes and torture.

"It is incumbent upon Canadian officials to investigate, arrest and prosecute former president Bush for torture when he arrives in Canada a week tomorrow," said Alex Neve, Amnesty Canada's secretary general.

Bush and former president Bill Clinton are scheduled to attend an economic conference in Surrey, B.C. next week.

Neve said many will argue that arresting Bush is unrealistic because the United States is a close and powerful ally or that the crisis after 9-11 required extraordinary measures.

"None of those arguments justify inaction under international law," he said.

Neve conceded that arresting a former president would likely cause tension with the United States, but "taking a principled step merits that sort of strain."

Neve said Bush admitted in his memoirs that he authorized the use of torture against terror suspects.

American authorities used a variety of torture methods, including water boarding, beatings and sleep deprivation, Neve said. The Bush administration used euphemisms such as "enhanced interrogation techniques," but these methods constituted torture.

"All of this was authorized and condoned and put in place through his own repeated decisions."

Neve said the international arm of Amnesty sent a lengthy brief to Justice Minister Rob Nicholson outlining the government's responsibilities under international law and urging him to act.

"This is something the entire global movement stands behind," Neve said.

Nicholson's office did not respond to a call for comment on Amnesty's demand.

Isn't it amazing how everyone feels that something THEY do is never wrong UNLESS it's someone ELSE doing it?

The End Does Not Justify The Means.

Torture is wrong no matter what you call it.

"Do unto other as you would have them do unto you." If this bible verse was law bush would be in serious trouble......

Where is AI on this?

"The former dissident said Gorbachev should be brought to justice because from 1989 to 1991 he ordered the dissolution of several protest demonstrations, which led to the death of 100 people as Soviet police and military clashed with violent protesters. The demonstrators were said to have been promoting nationalist slogans in Georgia, Azerbaijan and Lithuania. "

Pretty selective arrest list they have,...could there be politics involved?

Gorbachev was in Canada, why wasn't AI calling for his arrest?
He killed hundreds of his own citizens.
Why aren't they calling for Castro's arrest?

W Bush is so guilty of so many infractions against US and Intl law. If this man dares to show his bloody face beyond US borders, he should be arrested and tried, for crimes against humanity. Says something if the only path to justice we Americans can even hope for, come from beyond US borders. What does that say about US laws, morals and justice? It says, that there is one other reason to Occupy Wall Street, Haliburton being one of the badies.

Canada arresting an American President??? LMAO! Yeah, right. That's as ridiculous as a five year-old grabbing a pair of handcuffs and attempting to apprehend George Christie.

There are several countries that want to charge Bush for war crimes.Seems like he should be charged with useing 911 as an excuse to attack the wrong country and if being a threat and having weapons of mass destruction was justification to invade, why didn't Bush invade North Korea?

It does not have oil.
It's too close to China.
It's army is way too big.

(not necessarily in that order)
12:14 AM on 10/16/2011
Nope, sorry, none of the above. We haven't TOUCHED Iraqi oil. The reason we went after Iraq over WMD's but not North Korea is pretty damn simple. North Korea has never made direct threats against us. Saddam most certainly has. Big difference.

To Democrats:

"You chose policies that do not create jobs. You chose policies that grow government. Don't complain to us about jobs. You're getting what you want. You're getting what you voted for. You were asked to choose between fewer regulations to speed up innovation, and you chose more regulations. You did not choose a path that would lead to an expansionist economy. You did not choose policies or a path that would lead to enhanced opportunity for prosperity. You were asked to choose between more free trade or more union controls over business, and what did you choose? You chose more union control. So everything you've chosen, you've gotten. And therefore I don't understand why you're complaining, because you got everything you wanted.”"

In case you have not noticed, Republicans have blocked every single move the Obama administration has made since day one. The current administration has not been able to lead due to the obstuctionist game plan of your ilk. The tactics of delay and deny will ultimately backfire as most evil does, so you will get what you want least and deserve most. FOUR MORE YEARS!

How did they do that when Obama had a majority in both the senate and the house?
10:49 PM on 10/13/2011
Wow, great job Obama.

Is this the "Change We Need"?

Heres why we are looknig at a downgrade:

Bush deficits (including the wars):

2002 $159 billion
2003 $378 billion
2004 $413 billion
2005 $318 billion
2006 $248 billion
2007 $161 billion
2008 $438 billion

Liberals like to point out how Bush turned a surplus into a deficit, but conviently forget about the enormous costs of the attacks of 9/11. Bush was actually pretty succesful at getting those deficits down from '04 to '07.

Obama deficits

2009 $1.4 TRILLION
2010 $1.3 TRILLION
2011 $1.6 TRILLION (PROJECTED)

The funny thing, is that Obama would kill to have Bush's deficits. If Obama got his deficit numbers way down to where Bush's were, Obama would call it a resounding success. "

Bush spent almost a trillion on TARP alone and remember he started out with a surplus thanks to Bill Clinton.
11:15 AM on 10/14/2011
Only reason Clinton had a "surplus" was that the Republican controlled Congress and Senate during the last half of his administration kept his spending in check.

I voted for W the first time and didn't have the stomach to vote for him the second time. They wanted and needed these wars, they needed another pearl harbor. We may never know if they planned the attacks or if they knew the terrorists were coming. Either way, they got their wars and our tax dollars were used to feed the war machine one more time in a huge way. Two ten year wars, our nation cannot survive this kind of financial mismanagement. Lower taxes, borrow money from foreign countries to pay for the wars, it's ridiculous. It's like my boss telling me that I have to take pay cut, so I go out and buy 2 new cadillac's and make the payments with my credit cards. Nobody in their right mind would do this, but our government did it and nobody said a word.
He and his administraton should be investigated for war crimes, thousands of innocent persons in these two wars were killed and it was call collateral damage, not to mention the torture....

Seem there are two points to make here.
1. George Bush lied us into 2 unjust wars, killed alot of people and yes he used drones too. I also count our troops as US citizens, and how many of those have died and have suffered as a result of his lies?
2. What did I say in my comment, that made you think I am a Lib? Are you happy with the GOP field, they are pathetic? Yet you stand up and call people names just like your trained to do. Listen to Rush this week.....
