Ottawa Says 6,800 Exposed To Infection Risk

Ottawa Hiv Hepatitis Infection Risk

Ottawa Public Health says it will send letters to nearly 7,000 people who had procedures at a local medical facility to warn them they may have been exposed to Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV.

Stressing that he is not aware of any people who have become ill, Ottawa's medical officer of health Isra Levy said the letters are being sent so people can be made aware of the risk.

"Even though the risk of infection to those who had the procedures related to this issue is very low, I wanted to ensure that affected patients are made aware of the situation, so they can consider being tested for these infections," said Levy, at a hastily called news conference on Saturday afternoon.

Ottawa Public Health said it has been investigating an unnamed non-hospital facility for the past several months because of "lapses in infection control."

Because OPH doesn't know exactly when the lapse started, the 6,800 patients who will be contacted by registered letter next week cover a 10-year period.

"We don't know how long the problem has been going on for. We were notified at public health earlier in the summer," Levy said.

Levy wouldn't say exactly what the "lapse" was, but did say there are a number of reasons why problems arise including the improper cleaning of equipment and inadequate sterilization.

He stressed that the risk to patients is very low and that "at this time we are not aware of any person, any individual, who has become ill related to this lapse."

Levy said OPH will provide more information on the situation next week.

We need a healthy robust health care system. We need to realize that its not just the Doctors and Nurses out there. My wife is a Medical Assistant. She got her degree at a college in the USA after 2 years, an Associates Degree In Medical Office Administration. She was trained to give shots, to prep equipment, use an autoclave etc. Now we have these little shools like Trios churning out unskilled, undereducated people who then become staff members at these clinics. My wife took time off of work to take care of a family member who was ill. She applied recently to a new Health Care Clinic, and with her degree and 17 years experience, still did not get the job. So many of these jobs are going to these young no nothings. Thier diplomas are not worth the paper they are printed on, cut these are the people who provide the support to the Doctors and Nurses. But for the Doctors who run these clinics, they want cheap labor to do this work. As this continues, you will see more and more of these stories in then news. God help us all.

Experiencing this situation in the past, I can tell you it is really scary.
I received a letter in the mail not knowing this was occurring.
The letter stated that I needed to seek out a test for Hepatitis.
When I arrived at my doctor, they took out a second vial of blood. I asked them why afterwhich I was told that I was being tested for HIV. There was nothing in my notice from the Health Department that mentioned this.
Being a father expecting another I was terrified that my kids would not have one growing up.
I was luck but others were not. Although no one was infected with HIV many had contracted hepatitis.
A class action ensued and millions were dished out to those tested.

That is scary!!! Those diseases are not pleasant to catch at any time!!! And now through a Health Clinic, That's really BAD!!!! And, lastly, it took all summer for Ottawa's Officer of Health to figure out whether to notify the people who were exposed????? NOT ACCEPTABLE!!!!!

Well, when Doctors pay their staff just under minimum wage, and hire someone with a joke diploma from someplace like Trios Collge, this kind of crap will happen. We need to take all members our our health care team seriously, and pay them accordingly. Doctors hire the less experienced and cheaper labor to make a larger profit because they dont feel they earn enough through our health care system. Part of Trios college mission statement "triOS health care programs are designed to get you trained and into the work force quickly. Using job shadowing, internships and job placements, you receive training and practical exposure to the work place as part of your program, enabling you to be job-ready upon graduation." Notice the emphasis on "trained and into the work force quickly" Do you really want the person sanitizing equipment to be trained and into the workforce quickly?
