First Posted: 10/19/11 07:40 PM ET Updated: 12/19/11 05:12 AM ET

QUEBEC - An elderly man pleaded guilty today to his 24th charge of drunk driving in nearly a half-century.

Yvon Gingras also pleaded guilty to violating a court order forbidding him from driving a car.

Gingras' record for driving under the influence goes back to his first arrest for the crime in 1965.

The 67-year-old resident of St-Ubald, near Quebec City, asked to be released on bail in the current incident but he was refused.

The judge cited his lengthy record of driving while intoxicated.

Sentencing arguments will begin on Nov. 28.

Put an ankle bracelet on him, permanently, and make him work overnight shifts at the local morgue.

If that doesn't work, try some re-education a la Clockwork Orange.

Take his car. Take his license. Prison for 1 year. Fine him $20,000. ------------End of story.

What in the world is wrong with the justice system??? Having that many convictions. Come on he is not about to change his habits. Maybe he Needs to have his but in jail for a bit. Or better still go to the morgue and see first hand what a drunk driver does.Maybe he will stop before he kills someone!!

The Judges should be given prison time. If this moron is released and then kills or injures someone, the Judges that have been letting him go should serve his time.

24 times in 50 years? Not really that bad, especially since he apparently never caused anyone else any harm. If he's done this well in all this time, let the guy have his libations.

That is , of course, if he doesn't kill or injure a member of YOUR family, eh.

Not sure who's dumber, you or him!?!?

I don't get it. Doesn't his car have to be equipped with a breathalizer? Doesn't he have to check in every few months and get that data checked? How does he renew his licence and insurance?

Or someone is getting it for him. Or he is taking someone elses car. If he wants it bad enough he will get it. If it isn't his car there will not be abreathalizer in it. As for checking in they already know he is a drunk so that is what they will expect when he came in if he does. Just hope he never kills anyone.

This is why they should do away with DUI laws all together. I can guaranty this man caused no harm to himself or to anyone else in any of his arrests, if he did it would be in this article. He got "tagged' a long time ago by the local police and they just keep following him around until he makes a mistake: no blinker, 3 mph over the speed limit, "anything" to pull him over. A certian BAC level should not be an indicater that you will commit a crime and being an alcoholic does not "make" you a dangerous driver. The elderly, Asians, and seventeen year old "textaholics" cause more accidents and fatalities than a BAC of .16 ever has or ever will.

Here is an example where more jail time is a specific deterrent. Specific to this offender. If he's in jail he cannot drive and offend again. The 2nd charge in this instance appears to be violating a court order forbidding him from driving a car. The offender is not listening to what is being told to him by society. It seems if he is out he will offend again. I say throw the book at him and no time off for good behavior. Jail is the safest place for him to be.

I live in IL, and I can say, he wouldn't even make it to DUI number 24, let alone 20.

FYI to all of you not understanding the Canadian DUI Law .... first of all it does not say this guy never spent any time in jail. I would assume he has. If you get stopped and you blow over, you automatically lose your license. If convicted you face a maximum life sentence if you caused a death when your blood alcohol concentration is over 80, face a maximum 10-year sentence if you cause bodily harm when your blood alcohol concentration is over 80, face a mandatory penalty of $1000 for a first offence, face a sentence of 30 days in jail for a second offence, face a sentence of 120 days in jail for a third offence. Drivers can be charged with a criminal offence for refusing to take a roadside sobriety test. Police also have the right to take a driver suspected of impaired driving to a hospital or police station to provide blood, urine or saliva samples. DUI laws are strict and are taken very seriously in Canada. This guy is just an idiot and an accident waiting to happen. I hope they put him in jail for the rest of his life!
