Lesbians Kicked Out Of Tim Hortons In Ontario For Going 'Beyond Displays Of Affection'

Tim Hortons Lesbians

BLENHEIM, Ont. - A southwestern Ontario reverend says he was acting as a concerned father when he complained about a couple's public display of affection at a Tim Hortons in Blenheim last month.

Eric Revie of Glad Tidings Community Church says he was there with his wife and two children when he asked the manager to tell the couple to tone it down.

Riley Duckworth, 25, of London, and her partner Patricia Pattenden, 23, say they were told to leave the coffee shop because they are lesbians.

But Revie says at the time he thought it was a man and woman and found out the couple was actually same sex after he complained.

A spokeswoman for Tim Hortons says the couple was asked to leave after they "went beyond public displays of affection" while visiting the coffee shop three weeks ago.

Duckworth says she and Pattenden were outside drinking coffee with a group of family and friends and kissed once or twice but denies they were groping each other.

"There was a couple that were straddling each other, making out... not just kissing, going further than that," Revie told CFCO radio in Chatham on Monday.

"I had my children there, I asked the manager if she could ask them to tone it down," he said.

Duckworth said she and Pattenden were told "to leave within five minutes or the cops would be called."

"The manager said that our behaviour was inappropriate and that it was a family friendly establishment and it wasn't acceptable there," Duckworth said.

They were shocked but left to avoid creating a scene, she said. They have been to the same outlet previously and had received stares from customers, but nothing had ever been said, she added.

A Facebook group was created Sunday evening calling for a demonstration outside the coffee shop on Thursday that will be attended by friends, family and supporters including members of Pride Chatham-Kent.

By Monday afternoon, several hundred people had joined the Facebook group.

Revie said he had no idea the couple he was complaining about was gay.

"At the time that I went to talk to the manager, I was under the impression that it was a guy and girl, not two girls," Revie said.

Alexandra Cygal, manager of public affairs at Tim Hortons' head office, said it was not the store's intention to "offend or target anyone based on their sexual orientation."

"Tim Hortons and its restaurant owners have always welcomed all families and communities to their restaurants and will continue to do so," she said.

"The guests' behaviour went beyond public displays of affection and was making other guests feel uncomfortable," she said.

The management has apologized to the women and invited them back to their restaurant, added Cygal.

Duckworth said she was not contacted directly by anyone at Tim Hortons and read the apology for the first time on a website.

Duckworth said she'll never return to Tim Hortons again.

"We want to make sure this won't happen again to anybody else because it's wrong and it should have never happened in the first place."

"'The guests' behaviour went beyond public displays of affection and was making other guests feel uncomfortable,' she said.

"The management has apologized to the women and invited them back to their restaurant, added Cygal."

If the guests behaviour was really that egregious, then management did not owe the guests an apology and should stand its ground. If management is apologizing, then they're implying that they probably shouldn't have kicked the guests out in the first place.

Anyone with any small insight to human nature should realize that correcting someone while they are having fun rarely works. Generally, they will be offended that you are offended. After all, they were having fun before you stepped in, now you look like a kill-joy.

Well, let's see how that affects business. Not all gay and lesbian clientele are open about their sexual orientation. If business falls off in the near future....whoops!

Sometimes people make out in inappropriate place, big deal, its not like it's an epidemic plague Time Hortons patrons. Some times you just have to let people be, even if you dont agree with it or you think its inappropriate. Turning the other cheek can go a long way some time, and stop small incidents and uncomfortability form becoming an excuse for newsworthy stories to thousands of people.

Actually, I'd prefer to see two women showing a little affection for each other than a couple of overweight rednecks wearing baseball caps polishing off a plate of ribs.

Interesting that this didn't make it onto the HP version of the story:

"To add insult to injury, Murphy says, Revie then took his church group of about 15 people to the parking lot for a “prayer circle."

Prayer circle? And you HONESTLY expect me to believe this "pastor's" story now? Lol, not for a second. He saw two obvious lesbian women holding hands and wanted them gone, end of story. Shame on Horton's for not firing the manager who threatened the couple with an arrest if they didn't leave.

I have never heard of this restaurant, but you can be sure it'll be on my list of eateries to avoid in the future.

What if I am offened by the sight of a prayer circle? Can I get them tossed off the property?

PDAs lasting more than a couple seconds are invasive in public spaces and a business has every right to ask them to leave, esp when another customer complains. The threat to call the cops was perhaps excessive, but without being there, it's impossible to judge the situation. It's a non-story without all the facts. I don't see a lawsuit pending.
02:15 PM on 10/25/2011
yet the management issued an apology to the couple. Now why would one apologize if it were not an over reaction on thier part?

I smell a lawsuit and/or lots of free meals for this couple, who would be crazy to go there or recommend this dump to their friends. Prayer circle in the parking lot seems a lot showier than a same-sex kiss.

Being bisexual, homosexual or whatever is not an issue here. Swapping spit is one thing but if they were groping or something similar then I don't blame management for giving them the heave ho.

For a church group that holds prayer circles in the parking lot are that same crowd that would say a blessing over a burrito. To this crowd, if they suspected the two women were lesbians and they just smiled at each other, the minister and his crowd would have gone ballistic. Who arrived first?

Next time you see a couple kissing, hetero or otherwise, take out your camera phone (that's what they were made for) and record them. THEN go to the manager and complain. Put that video up on youtube and let the world decide. This story isn't as interesting without video

Or, if you see a bunch of kids yelling and throwing food in the restaurant and the parents do nothing ... geez! What's next? Washroom cams?

Hmmm, sounds a little bit like bullying to me. And you wonder where those little bullies learn their behavior!
09:22 AM on 10/25/2011
They always cry gay rights, but what if they were all over each other I don't want to see that either whether its 2 men,2 women or a man and a women this does not need to be a public display its gross.
09:49 AM on 10/25/2011
Threatening to call the police immediately seems excessive. And if the behaviour was actually so extreme as to warrant that sort of threat, why did management apologize and invite them back to the store? I can't help but notice that heterosexual couples who make out in public can go a lot further without causing "customer discomfort" than their homosexual counterparts. The same action rarely gets the same reaction.

And isn't it interesting that the "reverend" asked the manager to ask the couple to "tone it down" and the manager decided to tell them to leave under threat of police instead...

Why did the manager threaten them with the police? Wouldn't a warning be more appropriate such as, "Intimate displays of affection are frowned upon at Tim Hortons. This is a family restaurant. Please be respectful of our other customers." Then if they didn't oblige, then you threaten them with the police.

I would like to know what this couple was doing that got this level of attention. It sounded like it was more than a simple kiss.

Would it be possible that one of the couple was not being very friendly to the Managment when asked to stop their behavour.

Ken Powell of Glad Tidings Community Church. The story didn't bother mentioning the names of the accusers or the Tim Horton's spokeswoman but published the names of the two women. So, the credibility of the charge is seriously in question.

Read the article with your eyes fully open and you will see that the "accuser' is named. Please don't jump to confusions.
