Police in Gatineau, Que., say two cows they shot and killed Thursday were aggressive and a threat to residents.

Police fired their guns at least 10 times to shoot and kill one of the animals running loose in the community of Masson-Angers.

Police said the animals were found wandering on Montreal Road West near George Street at about 12:22 p.m. The animals were bound for an abattoir when they escaped Thursday afternoon from a trailer.

Police said the animals at times charged police cars. Children at a nearby primary school, St-Jean de Brebeuf, were asked to stay indoors while police attempted to corral the animals.

Police said it was impossible to contain the animals and, with the permission of the owner of the cattle, they shot and killed one of them the intersection of Chemin de la Rive and Chemin du Quai, about 30 kilometres east of downtown Gatineau. Another was shot and killed near the George Street exit of Highway 50 eastbound.

Residents near Chemin de la Rive and Chemin du Quai told CBC News they were shocked to see police officers draw their weapons and open fire near houses.

Video of the incident, posted online by an area resident, shows several police cruisers surrounding one of the cows.

As it attempts to gallop away, at least one officer appears to fire his gun, and at least six shots are heard. It is not clear if or where police hit the animal, but it appears to be limping when it walks on the grassy shoulder of de la Rive.

Police cars, with sirens blaring, slowly track the animal and try to cut it off its path.

A police officer again opens fire from about four metres away, firing another four shots.

Gatineau police said they tried several times to get the animals into the trailer and were unable to because of their aggressiveness. Police said all measures were taken to ensure no person was put in danger.

In what can likely be described as a PR nightmare for Gatineau police, the woman who shot the controversial video of police shooting a stray steer talked with us earlier today; http://buckinghamportal.wordpress.com/2011/11/03/btw-exclusive-reluctant-to-come-forward-woman-who-shot-controversial-video-of-police-shooting-steer-talks-with-btw/

In a brief conversation with the Lead Investigator from CETFA, the chain of events that led to police shooting and killing the steer actually originated with the truck carrying the animals in that it was not properly equipped to transport livestock. Nor, according to further research, was the driver properly trained in handling livestock. In short, a number of serious breakdowns occurred well before the police became involved.

There was no reason to shot and kill or as I saw it hurt him first before they killed the animal. Big cops, it the had all those car and siruns and those lights and firing I would go nuts too. SHAME OF THE POLICE. SHAME SHAME SICK

Law enforcement officers should have and be trained to use tranquilizer guns in their trunks as part of their ammunition and weaponry, on both humans and animals - a far more humane approach to stopping some-body from escaping a situation without permanently maiming or killing them. Killing like this is very unnecessary.

Did the cops later milk the cows for information?

Viva libertad. Free the cattle. Seriously, forty years ago I witnessed a dog hit by a motorcycle such that its brains were coming out of its eye socket. I caught it and held for the officer to shoot. He said let it go. He then fired 12 times without hitting it once. I hid under the squad car. He then declared the animal dead as it struggled in a ditch it had fallen into. He told me I was brave to risk getting bitten. Bitten!

such brutal incompetence is hard to imagine. the cop should not be allowed to handle a gun if he is such a lousy shot.

I'm betting that the cows had information that the fuzz didn't want them to testify in court about.

From the looks of it it appears to be a rural road. Couldn't they control traffic until someone could get a farmer to capture the cow? The officer sure used poor judgement unless he was instructed to kill if it broke confidement. Don't they have rifles up there? Like bringing a knife to a gun fight. I'm sure he feels poorly for his discion. I could see if this cow was loose at night or running on a major hi-way, or near a heavily populated urban city with uncontroled pedestrian traffic. I don't feel the officer was being cruel just showed poor judgement from this vantage point. Call the owner and get his cattle trailer and coral it. Force into nearby fenced feild, wait for the local game warden. What do they use on Mooses or Bear up there? Those can act a lot more agressively. Easy to second guess though however any one would know his side arm shopuldn't of been used in that instance. He was also fireing towards the road and houses,(probably why he aim3ed at the body as not to miss? Give him so slack as it's not an easy job for most.

Outragious and cruel. The cops just didn't want to deal with finding the farmer.
