Canada Role In UNESCO: Baird Reconsiders Support After Palestinian Decision

OTTAWA - Ottawa is reconsidering how much support it gives UNESCO, now that the United Nations agency has accepted the Palestinian Authority as a full member.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird says he is not happy with the recent decision by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and is examining options.

Baird says he appreciates much of the work UNESCO undertakes, but is having second thoughts.

The United States has just announced it will pull its US$60 million in funding from UNESCO.

Canada contributes about Cdn$10 million a year to the agency.

"We are not happy with the decision UNESCO has made, and we have to look and see what we should do in response," Baird said.

"I think UNESCO does important work that our government can support, but we are not happy with this decision, so we are in the midst of looking at our future participation," he said.

A spokesman for the U.S. State Department said Monday that the U.S. will maintain its membership and participation in the body, though it was not immediately clear how that would work if it was no longer paying its share of the costs.

UNESCO depends heavily on U.S. funding — Washington provides 22 per cent of its budget — but has survived without it in the past.

The UNESCO vote represented a fallback plan for the Palestinian leadership that presented its plan for UN recognition as a state and full membership in the global body in September.

Israel has fiercely opposed the bid, and it has no chance of passing because the Obama administration has promised to veto any resolution in the Security Council.

'European Poll: Israel Biggest Threat To World Peace"

EXCERPT:
"Results of a new poll commissioned by the European Commission show that Israel is believed by Europeans in 15 countries to be the greatest threat to world peace, greater than North Korea, Iran or Afghanistan.

"While the European Commission will release the full results of the poll on Monday, the International Herald Tribune reported that the 7,500 people polled living in the European Union (500 in each of the 15 E.U. member states) were presented with a list of 15 countries and asked if these countries present a threat to world peace. Shockingly, Israel was rated first."

Help me to understand something:
UNESCO's mission is "to contribute to the building of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information." (http://www.unesco.org/new/en/unesco/about-us/who-we-are/introducing-unesco/).
Now, since Palestinians / HAMAS are dreaming of destroying Israel (as well as Western countries) … how does it fit into UNESCO's mission statement (see above)?
Sorry guys, current Palestine must not be a member of UNESCO, same as North Korea for example.
And I am glad Mr. Harper (and his government) has guts to make a point, even when lots of people are not happy about it!

In fact, the Harper government should "reconsider" its commitment to hard-won international humanitarian law as its position on the Israel-Palestinian/Arab conflict is in flagrant violation of the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Fourth Geneva Convention which are binding on UN members.

As any informed person understands, Israel is an exclusionary expansionist state belligerently/illegally occupying Palestinian (and other Arab) lands and brutally oppressing and dispossessing the native inhabitants at an accelerating rate.

Chasing the so-called "Jewish vote," the Harper government's ME policy is determined by a slavish devotion to Israel and its lobby. What Harper, Baird, et al. fail to realize, however, is that they are only fueling the conflict, ill-serving Canada's real interests and placing Canadian Jews in an ever-increasing awkward position.

Sometimes the international organizations you are a part of make democratic decisions that you don't like but its something you have to live with. Not everyone will agree on everything and you won't always get your way but thats no reason to stop being a constructive and responsible member of that organization.

It's the reality within a democratic country as well.

Perhaps we need to be more vocal about reminding our elected representatives that they work for us, not Israel.

That's just another typical move on behalf of the present government. Destroy the educational opportunities for the world's poor children -- remove us from one of the world's most important forms for cultural and scientific activities --- and for what? So we can "support" Israel in its denial of rights to others (rights Israelis would kill to keep if you tried to take them away from them).

When are we ever going to have a decent foreign policy again -- one that supports justice and human rights rather than just whatever the Americans do?

Not surprising, since conservatives as a whole think that Palestinians are untermenschen.

we want a world where people are free...except THOSE people. it's so easy devising our foreign policy up here. we just ask a simple question: what would America do?

UNESCO's mission is "to contribute to the building of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information." (http://www.unesco.org/new/en/unesco/about-us/who-we-are/introducing-unesco/) We are thinking of cutting our funding to this organization? Under Harper Canada is an embarrassment.

Harper's policies don't even match several of the goals of UNESCO.

Having done UN duty, I fully support the withholding of funds over this issue.

I find it difficult to comprehend why a person who has "done UN duty" would stand with Israel, the victimizer/oppressor and well documented serial violator of international humanitarian law (e.g, the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 4th Geneval Convention) and ignore or dismiss the suffering of its victims.

Thanks for the easiest question I have been asked. For all of Israel's faults, the behavior of the palestinians has been much, much worse. Hamas, hezbollah and the PLO have done NOTHING to help the plight of the palestinian people, and actually, make it worse. These groups intentionally perform acts of terror, and then whine and cry when Israel retaliates. Sorry, zero sympathy until the palestinians themselves end this behavior.

Nobody will be able to resolve this 60-year nightmare of a war, until Israel votes out Likud.

Trying to push down off the world stage, an inevitable Palestinian state is ignorant. Keeping it out of the UN, does nothing to further a peace process which most of the world agrees is being obstructed by a Netanyahu whom doesn't care about it.
