OTTAWA - A new report says cancer and heart disease were responsible for just over half of Canada's 238,617 deaths in 2008.

And Statistics Canada reports cancer was the leading cause of death in every province and territory for the first time.

The agency says heart disease was the second-leading cause of death in every province and territory in 2008 — except Nunavut, where suicide ranked second.

Cancer accounted for 30 per cent of all deaths in 2008, followed by heart disease (21 per cent) and stroke (6).

Ranked in order, the other seven leading causes of death were chronic lower respiratory diseases, accidents (unintentional injuries), diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, influenza and pneumonia, kidney disease and suicide.

StatsCan says these 10 leading causes accounted for 77 per cent of all deaths in 2008, compared with 80 per cent in 2000.

By age group, there were differences in the leading causes of death.

Congenital abnormalities were the leading cause of death for infants under one year of age, accidents (unintentional injuries) for people aged one to 34, cancer for those aged 35 to 84 and heart disease for those aged 85 and over.

For young adults aged 15 to 24, the top three causes of death in order were accidents, suicide and homicide.

"The only disadvantage with being vegetarian is you outlive all your friends".
- George Bernard Shaw

I'd recommend everyone here to watch the movie 'Forks over Knives'.
It shows you the connection between foods like meat, milk, eggs and cancer.

An F&F for me would be really appreciated, if the movie convinces you.
If not, totally disregard me from now on and even LOL badge me.

I think I was twelve when I asked my Father why the advertisers didn't care about their own kids watching what they put out...from cigarette commercials (back then) to dangerous toys...mind you, our pellet guns and lawn darts never killed anybody, Darwin was a member of the Family !

Why aren't medical mistakes mentioned in this article?
Studies show that to be the third leading cause of death.

Number 3 cause of death is medical screwups, why don't we have a campaign against them?
Where are the armbands?
08:24 PM on 11/01/2011
well you know what unfort. you can not campaign against the goverment.Simple fact the goverment tells you that you have a free health services(funny they claim it's the universal health system),so the medical screw ups can happen everyday and just they go by like nobodys business.Liability insurance for doctors in Canada is sbsedized by the goverment and it's like $5000 a year ,some doctors in USA they pay like $200 000 every year for the insurance.Malpractice lawyers are very prominent in USA ,you don't see any of them here in Canada ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,go figure

Because we are too short staffed to function. Nurses work dangerous hours of overtime, yet hospitals aren't given the funding to hire more nurses (even though there are tons of us new grads out there who are more than willing to work), we lack doctors, updated equipment is pretty much out of the question (which would help protect patients from medication errors), and hell have you tried to read a doctor's hand writing? why don't we use a computer to make orders, which can check that it's the right dosage, etc,etc... and believe me honey there are armbands on every patient. It's the government not giving institutions enough funding to protect you and I. The government doesn't care.

Cancer is more common because our diets and western medicine as a whole have reduced the chances of dying before and just after the age of reproduction, not to mention our ability to keep people alive through circumstances that would have killed them outright in the past.

If you live long enough, you'll get cancer - it's that simple.

Although I do not contest your argument, there are added accelerators such as the toxicity of the water from the Great Lakes basin, Air borne Carsogens from the industrial belt in the US and Canada, House hold plastics etc etc. The concept of the inevitability of Cancer is not totally valid. Some people are not predisposed to it for some reason and others appear to have triggers in their genetic make up. Regardless, it is the most degrading and painfull way to die and any research that prevents this should be pushed to the max. Live with some one who is dying with it or watch close friends succumb to it like too many of us have and your perspective becomes very subjective.

How awful! I beleive that with all the billions of money collected yearly from donations there should be a cure by now. Put more into the actual rasearch and less to the organizations. Cancer is a terrible way to die. No one should have to go through it. If there is a possible cure out there everyone needs to know about it.
02:22 PM on 11/02/2011
I have watched cancer take so many lives, and to be honest I don't know what will ever cure it. Until we can change our DNA... because that's what cancer does. It damages DNA in our cells. How do we undo that? You can't reverse the reaction of burnt toast, how will we do that to our own cells?

It is so very sad is that the FDA Canada and FDA have made it illegal to tell people about the non-pharmaceutical remedies that enable the body to recover from cancer regardless how many former cancer patients are alive and well when they do 'accidentally' discover them. Instead they cooperate with Big Pharma who have no intention of actually curing cancer but to maintain patients on their drugs to make a profit.

Ya you go waste your time doing that, that's how a lot of people die because they waste their time not taking aggressive forms of medication and think they can get away with something 'natural.' It doesn't work! I know people who have turned to alternatives instead of taking aggressive treatment in the first place and guess where they are now? In their graves. Sorry but it's true and it's so wrong of you to make such a statement about that BS! It's people like you that lead people astray when aggressive medical treatment could have saved them.

Cancer has now reached pandemic proportions in this country and Govt is doing little or nothing. If this was a bird flu, there would be panic in the streets and billions would be going into prevention and cure. As it is now, private pharmaceuticals and universities do most of the research and it is for drugs which can be sold for a profit. Something wrong here people!
12:17 PM on 11/01/2011
You seem surprised? This is exactly as the neo-cons want it. Get government out of everything. Turn it over to private business. If you can afford the cure you get it. If you can’t you die. This is the future they are planning for us.

This has been the case for the last 25 years. It has become worse during the last 10. As for affording the cure, it has not been an issue here because our government medical insurance covers all initial treatments. Don't ask for a second round in Ontario because you won't get it even if your specialists scream life and death. I am not surprised, I am disgusted! This is one of the few instances where throwing tax payers money at it would actually accomplish something but our cancer researchers and treatment centres have to fund raise in order meet the demand. Some government medical plan eh? New fighters anyone?
