NEW YORK, N.Y. - Evelyn Lauder, a member of the Estee Lauder cosmetics family who helped create the pink ribbon symbol for breast cancer awareness, has died. She was 75.

Estee Lauder Cos. spokeswoman Alexandra Trower says Lauder died Saturday at her Manhattan home of complications from nongenetic ovarian cancer.

Evelyn Lauder worked for more than 50 years for the company, holding many positions and overseeing the development of fragrances and other products.

But she is best known as a champion of breast cancer research and for helping to create the pink ribbon campaign in 1992.

She was born Evelyn Hausner in 1936 in Austria and fled Nazi-occupied Europe with her parents to the U.S.

She was married to Leonard Lauder, the son of Estee Lauder and chairman emeritus of the company.

Oh, how sad! I had the pleasure of dining with Mrs. Lauder & her husband & they couldn't have been kinder to a wet-behind-the-ears kid. She was gracious & sweet. Evelyn Lauder was a woman who used her wealth & position for good; the world is the worse for her passing.

How sad that a woman who fought so hard for breast cancer awareness died of ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is so insidious beause it's almost "silent". By the time a woman realizes that she's afflicted with it it is often too late.

Rest in peace Mrs. Lauder and thank you for all you did to fight breast cancer.

The sad, sad irony -- breast cancer awareness has increased exponentially since the introduction of the pink ribbon campaign two decades ago. Some have even felt that breast cancer has come to dominate the attention and funding to the detriment of other forms of cancer. Ovarian cancer, for example, is a much more likely killer but is quite often ignored by the cancer "establishment;" there is very little awareness of the early symptoms and once it finally is found, it's usually too late. How sad that Evelyn Lauder would end up finding out about this the hard way.

Pancreatic cancer is similar to ovarian cancer in once it is finally detected, it is too late. I have lost loved ones to both. Rest in Peace Evelyn Lauder, my heart goes out to her family and friends.
