Holiday Don'ts: 10 Things To Avoid This Year

The Huffington Post Canada     First Posted: 11/13/11 09:54 PM ET   Updated: 11/23/11 02:39 PM ET

It happens every year after the holidays: you wake up and tell yourself that next year, you'll do things differently. You'll be more organized. You'll get less... tipsy. You won't be as stressed and take it out on your loved ones. You'll eat better. But somehow, things never change. You forget what you told yourself 365 days ago and make all the same mistakes over again.

But not this year: This year you won't drink the bar dry at the annual office holiday party, nor will you eat yourself into a turkey coma. Flip through our slideshow -- inspired by HuffPost Canada editors' own 'do not repeat' items -- and with any luck this gentle reminder at the start of holiday season will set the tone for a new, more festive you.

If you think we've forgotten a major holiday "don't", send us a Tweet at @HuffPostCaLiv.

That pounding in your head? That sneaking suspicion you said the wrong things to the wrong person? Yeah, that's a hangover. Everybody gets them and everybody hates them. So consider this -- drink less. Just because it's an open bar, doesn't mean you need to drink so much you'll be dancing on tables by 10 p.m. Use a bit of self-control and stay conscious. Don't lose your ability to remember that night. The day after, your body will thank you.

Yes, an article with common-sense tips, but always a good reminder. Although I am pretty well finished my Christmas shopping, it's fun to go to the stores near Christmas and watch the roiling crowds, and yes, hear the music!!

As for making the Christmas meal: at Christmas noon our daughters kick their mother out of the kitchen and prepare the turkey and the stuffing. I do the mashed potatoes; and then we let my wife back into the kitchen to make salad and gravy!! It's a well-shared meal, both in the making and in the eating!!!!

Merry Christmas to all, and stay safe!!!

Failing to make a proper thank you for a gift doesn't "appear" to be rude, it IS rude. And, just a suggestion, but everyone I know has all the stuff they need. More than they need. How about putting your money where it can do some good? How about sending some money to the SPCA to save a homeless dog? Or to the Heifer organization to help save the lives of a struggling family in Africa? Or to the Wounded Warriors fund to say help the family of someone who lost his arm or leg or sight while serving our country? Honestly, don't YOU have enough stuff already? Send your friends and relatives a pre-Christmas thank you note for giving you a gift that can really make a difference...a contribution to a worthy cause.
