552 Million People Could Have Diabetes By 2030, Experts Say Many Cases Still Preventable

Diabetes Rates World 2030 Who

The International Diabetes Federation predicts that at least one in 10 adults could have diabetes by 2030, according to its latest statistics.

In a report issued on Monday, the advocacy group estimated that 552 million people could have diabetes in two decades' time based on factors like aging and demographic changes. Currently, the group says that about one adult in 13 has diabetes.

The figure includes both types of diabetes as well as cases that are undiagnosed. The group expects the number of cases to jump by 90 percent even in Africa, where infectious diseases have previously been the top killer. Without including the impact of increasing obesity, the International Diabetes Federation said its figures were conservative.

According to the World Health Organization, there are about 346 million people worldwide with diabetes, with more than 80 percent of deaths occurring in developing countries. The agency projects diabetes deaths will double by 2030 and said the International Diabetes Federation's prediction was possible.

"It's a credible figure," said Gojka Roglic, head of WHO's diabetes unit. "But whether or not it's correct, we can't say."

Roglic said the projected future rise in diabetes cases was because of aging rather than the obesity epidemic. Most cases of diabetes are Type 2, the kind that mainly hits people in middle age, and is linked to weight gain and a sedentary lifestyle.

Roglic said a substantial number of future diabetes cases were preventable. "It's worrying because these people will have an illness which is serious, debilitating, and shortens their lives," she said. "But it doesn't have to happen if we take the right interventions."

CORRECTION: In an earlier version of this story, The Associated Press erroneously reported the number of cases that the International Diabetes Federation predicts in 2030. The group predicts there will be 552 million cases of the disease, not 522 million cases.

I get soooooooooooooooooooooo pissed off at those people who say "just don't eat sugar"! This kind of article is like the Salem witch trials that it is something "you do" to get Diabetes. It is a DISEASE, DAMB IT. The Pancreas does not work or your body cant use the Insulin it makes properly.
Just like non smokers get cancer! Or heart attacks when your cholesterol is great!
I "watch what I eat" and still take 400 units of insulin a day.

Diabetes is an insidious disease. I would advise anyone who has been diagnosed as prediabetic to follow your doctor's orders, and fight with all your might to keep the blood sugar under control to avoid Type 2 diabetes.

I was diagnosed in 2001 with Diabetes Type II, cause being the fact that the Government sprayed Vietnam with "Agent Orange" a defolient; don't know if pesticide was added; but since the use the past 40 years by landscape and pesticide companies to make life seem better; the spray's may have actually caused the young to get ADHD or something like that; which affects the youth's brain's; the elderly health, and the rest of the people in the world in one way or another. I guess you could say that is why Diabetes Type II is going to increase; since it will take another 40 years for someone to determine that what is sprayed in our inviroment affects us all.

Dairy, Grains and Refined Sugars of all types are the root of the problem. Eliminate these from your diet and you will be "Born Again".

Hey, go talk to Mary Tyler Moore. I can remember tears ago, when she would go on TV, tearfully pleading for donations---that a cure for diabetes was just around the corner, so close. Well, here we are, many years later. Where's the cure, Mary?

people get paid for endorsements.others donate because they loved the show

Same with Jerry Lewis and the Labor Day Telethon. "We are this much closer to a cure" is all I have been hearing for at least 40+ years, and we still havent found a cure, or so they want us all to think. They have a cure, as well as a cure for diabetes and many other diseases that we are desperately seeking cures for, but think about it, what would happen to all these big companies who put out diabetes testing supplies and other things if we found a cure??? Ever think about that one? If there were a cure for diabetes there would be no more need for insulin, meters, lancets, testing strips (which are very expensive) syringes, etc... without those being sold, millions of dollars are now not lining the pockets of some big CEO and they surely cant have that can they? A man in Canada has found the cure for diabetes, but the FDA will not allow him to share it, Land of the Free? better rethink that one, nothing is free including america, we are all paying the ulitmate price with our health and all so the government can make millions off of us, how freaking sad is that? If they "found a cure" for breast cancer, do you think they would tell us? Look at all the money those 3 day walks bring in, just saying.
01:02 PM on 11/14/2011
Think of it this way ... with the increase diabeties fewer people are going to reach retirement age and this will solve the Social Secruity problem. See, always look for the silver lining!

In this sedentary, high tech society where the human race has little or no reason to get off their rear ends and prefers it that way, of course they're going to sacrifice their health, in every way...And the pharmaceutical companies who need to make billions off of your poor health are doing cartwheels and rejoicing over their CASHCOWS...Your health is in your OWN hands and ill health can be avoided..Everyone knows what's healthy and what's not...
