New Toronto Blue Jays Logo Goes Old School

TORONTO - With a nod to the team's glory days, the Toronto Blue Jays have refined a vintage look for the 2012 season.

The team has tweaked its old-school logo, tinkered with the lettering and given the Blue Jay bird head a more stylized look.

Blue is also back in a big way.

Players will wear blue hats and blue shoes for all games next season. The black jerseys have been shelved in favour of white uniforms at home, light grey on the road and a royal blue alternate jersey.

The new look was unveiled Friday afternoon at a splashy media event at Rogers Centre. Slugger Jose Bautista was one of several players on hand to model the new-look uniforms.

"It's a pretty sharp look," Bautista said. "I like everything about it. Going back to the blue in Blue Jays was key."

The scripted lettering is gone, replaced with more of a classic look with sharp colouring. The uniforms look like a tweaked version of the jerseys worn in the early 1990s, when the team won back-to-back World Series titles.

"This is a fresh start," Bautista said. "We're looking to the future and this is a great way to kick it off."

The Blue Jays wanted to respect the tradition of the old look but give the uniform a modern feel. Team president Paul Beeston said he felt the return of the red Maple Leaf to the logo was a nice touch.

"It's a Blue Jay baseball team playing in Canada and representing Canada," Beeston said. "It's all there."

The organization took about 18 months to finalize the details. Manager John Farrell and the players also weighed in with their input.

"Obviously it's reminiscent of the old look," said catcher J.P. Arencibia, sporting a new royal blue batting practice jersey. "It just shows what we're doing here. It's a new era.

"We're trying to make history with these uniforms."

Split letters will be used for all three jerseys with the logo on the left side below the lettering, a few inches above the belt. The team name is spelled out on the home and alternate uniforms while Toronto appears on the road jersey.

Ricky Romero, Brandon Morrow, Adam Lind, Yunel Escobar and Brett Lawrie also modelled the new-look uniforms.

"I think the biggest thing for me was just getting blue back," said general manager Alex Anthopoulos. "We're the Blue Jays."

The event had a wedding reception feel to it. There was a red carpet outside the stadium entry gate and a jazz band played on top of the dugout.

The Blue Jays finished with an 81-81 record last season. They will kick off the 2012 campaign April 5 at Cleveland.

Glad they finally buried the legacy of JP Ricciardi and Paul Godfrey - two of the worst things to happen to this franchise - and brought back an updated version of their classic logo. Very sharp.

I love that we have a MLB team in this city, but we totally don't deserve one. The Toronto Blue Jays, a team that does a great deal for the community, with players who love playing and living in this city, the only team in the city with affordable tickets for an entire family, garner a total of 12 comments for this article and sometimes less than 10,000 people at their games.

The worst part is that they aren't a bad team!

By the way, it's about time they brought this logo back.

Actually there's never been less than 10,000 people at a game. Attendance was also in fact up an average of 2000 per game in 2011.

Kyle Drabek, son of one of the last great Pirate starters becomes the next Dave Stieb.....the Jays have a nice starting rotation, and some great hitters....I see them overtaking the aging Yankees and Red Sox and slugging it out with the Rays for the next few years....

I think the Rays aren't really built to last. They'll have to sell off Evan Longoria before his contract expires. Also, the Red Sox and Yankees will continue to spend and spend and spend. The 80's aren't coming back and the fan bases of those teams will not accept losing seasons anymore.

I'm sure these changes will result in a greatly improved team for 2012.

Seriously? . . . . shouldn't you be out looking for some starting pitching?

I know they have some good young arms in the minors. That doesn't change the fact that they have no top flight starters on the team. They groom them, then let them go when they become too expensive to sign. Just like the Expos did.

how about making the playoffs and stop changing logs to sell more merchandise?

You know they play in the AL East, right? Their best shot at making the playoffs would to finish with 60 wins for about 10 straight seasons like the Tampa Bay Rays did.
10:51 AM on 11/19/2011
you know they won 2 back to back world series, right?

back when the team was run by people want to succeed instead of just making moolah
sort of like the toronto maple leafs

make money, who cares about success

I like the new retro logo. I hated the logos since the original classic disc. Every one of those "hip" new attempts were big failures and bad luck. Not one playoff appearance since we dumped the original logo. The new one might give them the psychological boost and bring bad the older fans like me.
03:08 PM on 11/18/2011
It's about damned time. Now can we PLEASE also go back to the uni design and colours from the glory days?
11:48 AM on 11/19/2011
Ah, I see that they have. Excellent.

I would like to add that I had to go to an actual news site to find out about and see the new unis. Really HuffPo Canada? A headline story from you based on someone's Twitter reaction to the new logo rather than from the source(s) reporting the complete story? Shame on you.
12:17 PM on 11/19/2011
Oops. Story body has changed since I first saw it. It now includes the info on the unis. No pics, but my bitchin above was premature regardless. My bad, HuffPo.

The old school logo was the best, I'm glad they came to their senses and brought it back. That other new one was just bad.
