Salvatore Montagna, Bonanno Crime Boss Suspect, Dead Near Montreal

MONTREAL - The body of an alleged Mafia boss, who U.S. authorities said once headed New York's notorious Bonanno crime family, was fished out from a river north of Montreal on Thursday.

Reports identified the body as Salvatore Montagna, although police wouldn't immediately confirm or deny the identity.

Nicknamed "Sal The Iron Worker," he owned and operated a successful steel business in the U.S.

The FBI once called him the acting boss of the Bonanno crime family — prompting one of New York's tabloids to dub him the "Bambino Boss" because of his rise to power in his mid-30s.

His death is the latest in a series of Mafia-related killings and disappearances over the last two years. Montagna was considered a contender to take over the decimated Rizzuto family.

Montagna was born in Montreal but raised in Sicily and, although he moved to the United States at 15, he never obtained U.S. citizenship.

The married father of three was deported to Canada from the United States in 2009 because of a conviction for refusing to testify before a grand jury on illegal gambling.

He pled guilty to the minor charge, but it made him ineligible to stay in the U.S. Montagna had no criminal record in Canada and re-entered this country without any trouble.

His arrival in Montreal occurred just months before members of the Rizzuto family began being killed.

The FBI had called Montagna the acting boss of the Bonanno crime family, an allegation his lawyer publicly denied.

The Bonanno crime family is one of the five largest Mafia families in New York — one of the notorious criminal gangs that formed the original Commission, along with Al Capone and Lucky Luciano. The Bonannos also had close ties to the Montreal Mafia.

There had been speculation that Montagna had been part of the new Mafia leadership in Montreal and was trying to reorganize the leaderless group.

His death comes just two months after another man with Mafia ties, Raynald Desjardins, narrowly escaped death in a shooting in Laval, a suburb north of Montreal.

Desjardins had close ties to Vito Rizzuto, the reputed head of the Montreal Mafia who is currently imprisoned in the United States.

A rash of killings and disappearances in late 2009 and early 2010 decimated the operation and have robbed him of many of his closest family members.

Rizzuto's father and son were gunned down, as were other friends, while his brother-in-law simply vanished.

Montagna became the latest name on the list.

A provincial police spokesman said Thursday that a private citizen called just after 10 a.m., having spotted a body along the shores of the L'Assomption River.

The same person also reported to local police that he heard gunshots, but Sgt. Benoit Richard said he couldn't confirm just how the victim died.

"When (police) arrived, they saw a man lying near the river, they took him out of the water and started doing CPR with the help of the emergency personnel," Richard said.

"The man was transported to the nearest hospital where he was pronounced dead."

Richard said police will await the results of an autopsy, scheduled for Friday, to determine the cause of death.

CORRECTION: An earlier headline on this story incorrectly spelled the Bonanno surname.

I wish the FBI and CIA would hurry up with all of these whackings. Those who I have CURSED are probably going to have nightmares for a long time that will drive them to suicide; if not them, then someone very close to them in or family is going to have a very tragic end. A Very Goy Merry Christmas to you ALL.

According to the state Division of Criminal Justice Services, it takes an average of 949 days — two and a half years — for violent felony cases to go to trial in the Bronx

Well, it's a start. It would be great if someone would "whack" the rest of the obnoxious Italian-American trash that is ruining the East Coast. Bury him off the Jersey Shore with his friends and the fishes.

Mafia at one time, had a code of honor, and families, others unknown to them, living in their communities were protected, crime wasn't rampant, if a thug would rob, injure or rape women, intrude in anyone's home without being invited, know that person had to answer to the Mafia.
Police had the utmost respect and laws were enforced. Not to condone the actions of the Mafia, but streets were safer with them in place. Unlike the gang sects over the USA, to prove their worthy of being a member, have to randomly pick an unsuspecting target and make sure those cases are in the News, aired on television and in the papers to get in or to get their stripes.
Today's mafia, have disavowed their code of ethics, families aren't off limit, women and children are targets should a mob soldier or boss become a turncoat and flip on their Mafia Families.
There was a moral code that had to be upheld in all walks of life, family, street or employment, not today, there's no morals or values, nor is their respect for human life.

actualy what he said is true.
they had a very strict code of conduct and protected there communities very well because they wanted there famileys to be able to walk at night and go anyplace by foot without being bothered.
years ago mob boss john gotti's mother was muged in the city a few blocks from her home, when the goon who did it found out who he muged he turned himself in to the police before the mob inforcers could find him and he made a big public statement saying sorry. he never would have had the chance had the mob been out like they used to be.
not that i suport crime but what they did for there area can not be knocked. it was drugs that realy started the downfall of communities and how they put money over honor.
